9 Among young people ages Prescription Drugs have become the second most abused illegal drug behind marijuana. For the first time there are just as many new abusers (12 and older) of prescription drugs as there are for marijuana (SAMHSA, 2006) Among year olds, the gap between new marijuana users and new prescription drug users is shrinking. Between 2003 and 2005 the gap closed by 5.9 percent. In 2005, the estimated number of year olds who started using prescription drugs in the 12 months prior to the survey was 850,000 compared with 1,139,000 marijuana initiates. In 2003 the estimates were 913,000 for prescription drugs compared to 1,219,000 marijuana initiates. (NSDUH, 2004 and 2006) 3%, or 840,000 teens ages reported current abuse of prescription drugs in 2005 making it the second most abused drug category next to Marijuana (7%) (NSDUH, 2006)

10 Teens are abusing prescription drugs because the believe the myth that these drugs are Safe. 12 The Majority of teens get prescription drugs easily and for free, often from Friends or Relatives. Nearly Half (47%) of teens who use prescription drugs say that they get them from a relative or friend for free, 10% say they buy them, and another 10% say that they took the drug without asking. (NSDUH, 2006) More than three in five (62% or 14.6 million) say that prescription pain relievers are easy to get from parents medicine i cabinets. (PATS, 2006)

13 Pain Relievers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin are the most commonly abused by teens On average almost four percent (3.5%) of 8 th to 12 th graders reported using OxyContin, and 6% reported using Vicodin in thepast year. (Monitoring The Future study, 2006) In 2006, past year abuse of OxyContin among 8 th graders exactly doubled increasing 100 percent over the last four years (from 1.3% 3%in 2002 to 2.6% in (MTF, 2006)

17 What Can You Do? Tips for preventing Teen Rx Abuse Safeguard all drugs at home. Monitor and control access: How many?? Keep track of refills. fll Set Clear rules for Teens about all drug use: sharing medication is a NO NO, follow medical providers advice and dosage. Be a good role model: follow the same rules with your own medications. Properly conceal and dispose of old medication: Throw in the trash with undesirable substances ( coffee grinds, kitty litter), DO NOT flush medications unless the directions on the bottle unless indicated Ask friends and family to safeguard prescription drugs *www. theantidrug.com

Don t makeexcuses excuses Try to remain calm and connect with him/her. Be prepared p to practice what you ll say. ACT NOW

19 Suggestions of what to say to your son or daughter You LOVE him or her, and you are concerned. You KNOW that drugs may seem popular, there are serious consequences. It makes you FEEL worried and concerned about him/her when he/she does drugs. You are there to LISTEN to him/her. You WANT him/her to be a part of the solution. You tell him/her what you WILL do to help him/her. Know that you will have this discussion many, many times. Talking to your kid about drugs and alcohol is not a one time event.
