3 Colorado Snap Shot Colorado: Between , Colorado remained relatively consistent with a prescription opioids ED visit rate around per 100,000. However, Heroin ED visits have more than doubled between 2011 and 2015 with a rate around 11 per 100,000 in 2015.

11 Brief History of TCOPP Arapahoe County Concerned Commissioner Pulled together task force with various County departments, Kaiser, community mental health centers Adams County Concerned citizen approached County Commissioners Convened diverse stakeholder group with government, private, nonprofit partners

12 Brief History of TCOPP Tri-County Health Department convened leadership from both counties action groups Purpose: Identify shared goals and objectives Explore opportunities for collaborative efforts Identify next steps Outcomes: Shared learning opportunities Joint collaborative with TCHD facilitation

We must address this complex issue with a multipronged approach Data and Evaluation Surveillance of outcomes and evaluation of strategies is key to inform efforts, continuously improve, and document success

18 Work and Accomplishments Provider Education Strategy Received grant from state health department to promote use of prescribing guidelines Held one CME event last year Completed environmental scan/ needs assessment from December- March Currently creating a work plan based on findings from scan/needs assessment Provider Education Prescribing Practices PDMP

19 What do providers want? Take-aways from the environmental scan/needs assessment Guidelines Most providers know about the guidelines but don t have time to read through all the details suggested creating a 1-pager for providers Time can be a barrier in using any guidelines Pushy patients present challenges to using the guidelines Topic suggestions Half want training on OUDs Nearly everyone wants training on alternatives to opioid prescribing Preferred in-person, followed by preference for online learning Consider alternative modalities Other Recommendations Provide incentives: CME credits and/or COPIC pts Recruit engaging, dynamic, and respected speakers Charge nominal fee for training Serve a meal Fit into existing meetings if possible Some preference for later in the week (Thurs/Fri)

20 How can TCOPP best engage the medical community in this effort? What are the needs within your specific practice with regard to opiates that local public health and/or community based organizations could assist with?

This is your brain on drugs PSA Learn about safe use, safe storage, and safe disposal of prescription medications Join a community coalition Safely dispose of your medications at a permanent takeback location or DEA event Share information about Naloxone
