Classifications of drugs and their usage, with specific information on mechanism of action, side effects, and dosing will be discussed. Preparation and administration of medications, interpreting prescriptions, and dispensing medications will also be covered, as well as the mathematics of dosage and formulation PREREQUISITES: VETA 1104, VETA 1201 and MATH This class must be taken before or in conjunction with VETT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students must demonstrate ability to meet the following technical/performance standards while receiving instruction outlined in each course syllabus: Read and communicate orally and in writing using the English language Hear with or without auditory aids to understand normal speaking voice without viewing the speakers face Visually, with or without corrective lenses, observe behaviors of animals and changes in animal s condition as well as actively participate in the learning process Handle animals in a safe and humane manner outlined in the courses Utilize stamina, strength and psychomotor coordination necessary to perform routine nursing procedures as dictated in all areas of the clinical setting Demonstrate use of gross and fine motor skills necessary to provide independent, safe, and effective nursing care of patients Solve problems and apply critical thinking skills while providing safe and efficient patient care Interact with individuals from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds Adapt and function in a multi stressor environment while adhering to legal/ethical guidelines of the school, veterinary medical associations (i.e. practice act in Louisiana), and clinical agencies ASSESSMENT MEASURES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to, with a minimum of 70% accuracy: Administration

2 Correctly comply with veterinarian s pharmacy (medication) orders, both written and verbal Understand the meaning of the terms dose, dosage strength, dosage interval and dosage Knowledge of terms used in medication orders, including appropriate abbreviations, and applies them correctly in the clinical setting Recognize commonly used groups of drugs, their mechanism of action, and clinically relevant side effects Understand the clinical pathology underlying common disease processes targeted by frequently used drugs Understand primary mechanisms of action of commonly used drugs Understand the drug s major therapeutic effects and applications, contraindications, and clinically important, mechanism based adverse effects Accurately perform appropriate calculations; use weights and measures correctly Understand relevant measurement systems, including metric, apothecary and household systems and accurately apply them in the clinical setting Convert between systems of measurement Calculate drug doses Measure out doses of both enteral and parenteral medications Safely and effectively administer drugs by common parenteral and enteral routes; be able to explain appropriate routes and methods and when used Understand comparative rates of absorption and onsets of effect of various administration routes Knowledge of drug types that should not be given by certain routes (SQ, IM, IV) Understand factors in determining an appropriate route and method of drug administration such as the individual patient, the veterinarian s instruction and the prescribed drug to achieve the greatest therapeutic response while minimizing potential adverse responses Monitor therapeutic responses Recognize therapeutic effects of drugs and distinguish them from adverse effects of drugs Understand changes in patient status following drug administration Demonstrate the ability to accurately record medical information Accurately record information in patient s record, including name of drug, dose administered, route of administration, site of administration, and when and by whom medication was administered Use correct drug names and abbreviations where appropriate Demonstrate understanding of controlled substance regulations Understand and adhere to DEA regulations in maintaining a readily and retrievable accurate inventory log of scheduled substances Define the terms controlled and scheduled drug Knowledge of the classification of controlled drugs into five schedules Identify common controlled drugs used therapeutically in veterinary practice and correctly classify them as to Schedule (II-V) Knowledge of compliance with federal and state regulations governing purchase, storage, labeling, administration, dispensing, and inventory of scheduled drugs Understand proper disposal of unused dose of controlled substance Keep a controlled substance inventory log, accurately record each use both in the controlled substance inventory log and in the patient s medical record Demonstrate compliance with all federal regulatory guidelines for drug purchase, storage, administration, withdrawal, dispensing, disposal, and inventory control (e.g. biologics and therapeutic agents, pesticides, and hazardous wastes) Knowledge in accurately identifying and differentiating drugs, biologics, pesticides, insecticides and hazardous wastes Knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to these substances, including the roles of the FDA, USDA, DEA, and EPA Dispensing Given a drug order, properly prepare medications for dispensing, including performing accurate calculations Demonstrate familiarity with the names of the commonly used agents Understand veterinary terminology and abbreviations in medication orders and prescriptions

3 Prepare drugs in prescribed form, dose, dosage strength and number of doses Perform appropriate dosage calculations, correctly using weights and measures Demonstrate compliance with regulations governing prescription drugs versus over the counter drugs Understand the concept that no drug is free of risks, and that all drugs are associated with potential hazardous or undesirable side effects Understand that prescriptions drugs are considered by the FDA to be unsafe for use, except under the supervisions of a veterinarian, physician, or other practitioner licensed to prescribe drugs Understand that OTC drugs do not require the supervisions of a licensed practitioner and to not require a prescription to be purchased Understand FDA labeling, including approved indications, contraindications, warnings, precautions, adverse reactions, dosage and administration Understand the concept of extra-label drug use Understand federal regulations regarding the compounding of drugs for use in animals Relay drug information to clients (e.g., handling, storage, administration, side-effects, drug interactions, safety, reasons for drug use) Communicate necessary drug information to clients in a manner that maximizes client understanding, compliance with prescribed therapy and safety for both client and patient TEXTBOOK/S: Applied Pharmacology for Veterinary Technicians 4 th Edition Boyce P Wanamaker & Kathy Lockett Massey SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT: None ATTENDANCE POLICY: Class attendance is the responsibility of the student. All students must be officially enrolled in any course that they attend. It is expected that students attend all classes and be on time. If an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student for making up examinations, obtaining lecture notes, and otherwise compensating for what may have been missed. Students who stop attending class and do not officially drop, withdraw, or resign from the college may receive a grade of F for all coursework missed. Absences affect performance in this course and do not reflect well on participation. No student may substitute the attendance of another student. GRADING REQUIREMENTS: Homework and Quizzes 40% Section Exams and Final 60% GRADING SCALE: A % B 89-80% C 79-70% D 69-60% F 59-50% ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND CONDUCT: Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. Behavior that violates these standards is not acceptable. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited and are subject to disciplinary actions established in the Student Code of Conduct. The instructor reserves the right to assign a grade of F on any type of assignment or examination based on evidence that the student has violated the Student Code of Conduct. STUDENT BEHAVIOR/CLASSROOM DECORUM: Students are encouraged to discuss, inquire, and express their thoughts and views during class. Classroom behavior that interferes with either the instructor s

4 ability to conduct the class or the ability of students to benefit from the instruction is not acceptable. Students are required to turn off all cell phones or similar electronic devices (or place them on silent mode) before coming into the classroom. The instructor reserves the right to assign no credit for work on that day if a student talks or texts on a cell phone or similar electronic device. The classroom is not a place for children, and students are not to bring their family members into the classroom.
