Prescription Drugs

Facts Every day 2,500 youth (12-17 years old) abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time in U.S. Drugs are #1 accidental killer From 1999 to 2008 painkiller sales rose 300% 90%increase in poisoning deaths According to the CDC 61 deaths occur in the U.S per day due to pharmaceutical drugs 12 million Americans (12 or older) have used prescription drugs nonmedically

Facts Cont. Most prescription painkillers are prescribed by primary care, internal medicine doctors & dentists NOT specialists! Each year more than 20,000 people die from drug overdosing Chance of being killed by prescription drugs is 62 times greater than being killed in a homicide People who visited an emergency room after taking too much of a sleeping drug were more than twice as likely to end up in an intensive care unit if they had also consumed alcohol, compared with those who took a sleeping medication but had not had anything to drink

How They Kill Decrease perception of pain so people become addicted Addicts develop a tolerance so they repeatedly take more & eventually overdose Mixing alcohol w/ medication Slows heart rate & breathing Causes drowsiness and dizziness making falls & accidents more likely

Where do people get the drugs from? Sales 7% 5% 5% Other Sources Dealer or Stranger 55% 17% 11% Took from friend or relative without asking Bought from friend or relative Perscribed by doctor Obtained free from friend or relative

Who is the most at risk? years old People on Medicaid Prescribed painkillers at twice the rate of non- Medicaid patients and are at six times the risk of prescription painkillers overdose People with family history of substance abuse 3-5% people who take pain medication eventually become addicted

Help 48 states have either operational Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs or have passed legislation to implement them ONDCP s Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Plan Education Monitoring Proper medical disposal Enforcement 855-DRUGFREE Drugfree.org

MAGNESIUM IS AMAZING

Magnesium 70-80% of Americans have low or deficient magnesium levels Magnesium is needed for over 300 body processes, including: Muscle and nerve function Regular heart contractions (heartbeats) Building strong bones Regulating blood sugar levels and blood pressure Signs of low magnesium: numbness and tingling, muscle cramps, weakness, abnormal heart beats

What can more magnesium do for you? Helps reduce blood pressure Dilates coronary arteries increasing oxygen flow to the heart Reduces risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart disease Use it for Asthma Diabetes Restless leg syndrome Migraine headaches PMS Magnesium glycinate chelate is well absorbed and easy on the stomach

Recent News Story on Atrial Fibrillation Atrial fibrillation = Irregular, rapid heartbeat Incidence of this problem is increasing every year Why? Some experts believe the cause is magnesium deficiency! Heart rhythm is maintained by a balance of magnesium and calcium most Americans have much more calcium than magnesium in their diets Did you know? The heart uses more magnesium than any other organ in the body. In a recent article, Dr. Carolyn Dean points out that in conventional medicine literature on treating atrial fibrillation, not ONCE is the importance of magnesium stressed.

MAGNESIUM HAS A POWERFUL PARTNER: P-5-P

Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate or P-5-P Three typical forms of B6 used in supplements pyridoxine hydrochloride pyridoxal pyridoxamine These forms are converted in the liver to the form of vitamin B6 used by the body: P5P Low rates of conversion from the inactive to the active form of vitamin B6 have been reported in People with poor liver function Celiac s disease Children with autism Genetic inefficiencies

Magnesium s partner P-5-P Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate or P5P active form of vitamin B6 Does not need to be converted by the liver Use in combination with magnesium for Carpal tunnel syndrome Fluid retention PMS Nerve pain Dosage: mg of magnesium paired with mg of P-5-P daily

P-5-P Bioactive Vitamin B6 Coenzyme Assists in synthesizing heme, the iron-containing component of red blood cells creating the hormone serotonin (the feel good hormone) processing carbohydrates for energy keeping the nervous system working smoothly, supporting hundreds of other jobs Cooking, freezing, canning, storing or processing foods can deplete vitamin B6 content by as much as 50%!

Uses Pain, especially nerve pain Tendon and ligament pain Complications of diabetes Burning foot syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome Edema (water retention) Heart health (homocysteine levels) PMS and Menopause Autism and ADHD And more
