Poster in 2012 ARVO Annual meeting, May 6-10, 2012, Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA Narrative Report (limit to 500 words) I am a postdoctoral fellow at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. I received my M.D. in 1998, and a Ph.D. in 2009, from Seoul National University College of Medicine, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at Seoul National University. In 2006, I obtained an M.B.A. from Korea National Open University Graduate School in South Korea. After completing a fellowship in ophthalmology at Seoul National University, I was appointed as a temporary Assistant Professor at Boramae Municipal, an affiliate of Seoul National University, the most famous medical school in South Korea. Though I had planned to open a private ophthalmology clinic, it was a great opportunity for me to add a proud credit to my resume. However, after two years, the 10

11 experience totally changed my life and I became more interested in the research and education of the students and residents. When the position was eliminated, I searched for a new position in which I could continue research and teaching, but such a position is very limited in South Korea. After deep consideration, I decided to learn more about research, but I was concerned because I was nearly 40 years old with a family to support. Fortunately, I became a postdoctoral fellow in a world famous research group in corneal immunology at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. This move proved to be a wonderful turning point in my life. As a scientist, I have studied both clinical and basic fields of vision research such as keratoprosthesis, scleral lenses, the effect of transglutaminase on cataract and posterior capsular opacification, allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, and corneal nerve changes in diabetic patients. As a result, I have published 25 peerreviewed articles in English or Korean journals such as Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Graefe s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, to name a few. In addition, I served on the Board of Academic Activities, Board of Publications in the Korean Contact Lens Study Society of Ophthalmologists, and the Korean Optometry Society. Two of my research proposals, though I was not a PI, were accepted and successfully finished. I am the recipient of an international travel grant from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and won Best Paper of the Session from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). My current research focuses on understanding the neuronal changes in the dry eye disease at the immunological aspects. 11
