1 Winter 2017 Keep the happy in holidays 8 tips for making them safe CELEBRATIONS make this time of year festive but they also bring hazards. Here s how to keep you and your family out of harm s way: 1. Step up carefully. Use a step stool or ladder to place decorations in high places. 2. Be cautious with candles. Always keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. Don t forget to blow them out when you leave the room. 3. Check holiday lights. Look for any exposed or frayed wires, loose connections, or broken sockets. 4. Fireproof your tree. Live trees dry out rapidly. So keep the stand filled with water. Turn off all tree lights and decorations when not in use. And keep your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and portable heaters. 5. Watch out for poisonous plants. Keep mistletoe berries, holly berry and Jerusalem cherry out of reach of tots and pets. 6. Match toys to kids ages. Always take the time to check packages for age ranges. Toys above a child s age level may be hazardous. Standard U.S. Postage PAID Walla Walla, WA Permit No Don t forget the helmet. If you re surprising a child with a bike, skateboard or other riding toy, be sure to include a helmet. 8. Protect your family and guests from food poisoning. Reheat holiday leftovers to at least 165 degrees to keep dangerous bacteria from multiplying. University of Maryland Health Advantage 1966 Greenspring Drive, Suite 100 Timonium, MD 21093

5 Eat smart for better blood pressure THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, how can you keep your blood pressure from creeping up? One of the best ways is to take your blood pressure medication every day and watch what you eat. Eating enough of some foods and cutting back on others can help you keep your blood pressure in a healthy range. Make your holiday dishes and all of your meals with more: fruits and veggies, especially potassium-rich ones. They include: Leafy greens, such as spinach and collards. Fruit from vines, such as grapes and blackberries. Root vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit. Whole grains, such as 100 percent whole-wheat pasta, cereal and bread. Enjoy brown rice and oatmeal too. Low-fat or fat-free dairy products, such as milk and cheese. Nuts and legumes, such as peas, beans and lentils. Nontropical vegetable oils, such as canola, olive and peanut oil. Skinless poultry and fish. Eat less: Solid fats, such as butter and lard. Red meat, such as beef and lamb. Salty foods, such as pizza, cold cuts, and olives and pickles. Sugary foods, such as sugary drinks, cakes, cookies and candy. One last tip Finally, if your blood pressure is high, ask your doctor about the DASH diet. It s an eating plan that s been shown to bring blood pressure down over time. Sources: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; American Heart Association; National Institutes of Health Diabetes How s your A1C? Controlling your blood sugar is key to managing diabetes. That s why it s so important to eat well, exercise and take medicines prescribed by your doctor. It s also why you need to check your blood sugar levels regularly. Home tests can tell you your blood sugar level at any given time. But if you want a clearer picture of your overall diabetes control, A1C tests are a must. An A1C test is ordered by your doctor usually at least twice a year. It shows your average blood sugar level over the previous two to three months. That tells you and your doctor how well your treatment plan is working. It s worth taking note of because good blood sugar control lowers your risk of diabetes complications. A1C results are reported as a percentage. For many people, the goal is to stay below 7 percent. But your doctor may set a different target for you. If your A1C isn t where you d like it to be, you can change it. Eating healthy foods will help. So will staying active and following your doctor s advice. With teamwork, you can get your A1C where it needs to be. Get your test strips delivered from an innetwork DME supplier. Winter 2017

6 Mental health Key to your well-being WELLNESS is more than not being sick. Yes, your body s health is important. But so is the health of your mind. How s your mental health? Some signs can point to a problem that could get better with medical help. Examples of these signs are: Finding little joy in life or feeling worthless or guilty. Crying without knowing why. Intense worries or fears. Low energy or anger flare-ups. Mood swings feeling very high, then very low. Seeing or hearing things that aren t there. If you have symptoms like these, let your provider know. He or she will help you get care that can help you feel better. That might include talking with a mental health expert and taking medicine. Some people think they should be able to handle these types of issues on University of Maryland Health Advantage is an HMO and HMO-SNP plan with a Medicare contract and a State of Maryland Department of Health Medicaid program contract. Enrollment in University of Maryland Health Advantage depends on contract renewal. This information is not a complete description of benefits. Contact the plan for more information. Limitations, co-payments, and restrictions may apply. Benefits may change on January 1 of each year. The Formulary and pharmacy network may change at any time. You will receive notice when necessary. H8854_18_ _003_OE CMS accepted 10/28/2017 Sometimes people need emergency help. If you or someone you are with feels the need to do harm to anyone, including himor herself, call 911 or the Maryland Crisis Hotline at their own and that it s a sign of weakness if they don t. But thinking that way only makes it harder to get healthy.
