Baby weigh in Focus of activity: Reading scales in kilograms to the nearest.kg. Working together: conceptual understanding Say that most new born babies weigh between and kg. Usually babies are weighed regularly to see that they are putting on weight, so giving their weight to the nearest kilogram is not accurate enough. It s good to know their weights to the nearest tenth of a kilogram. (You might want to add that babies used to be weighed in pounds and ounces, and some people still like to say their baby s weight in pounds and ounces.) Give each child a picture of some baby weighing scales (see resources with child instructions). Explain that each little mark is one tenth of a kilogram. Remind chn that we can write one tenth as / or.. Count along the scale in steps of.: zero point one, zero point two being careful that chn don t say zero point ten after zero point nine! Do any chn know their birth weights in kilograms? If so, ask them to mark their birth weight on the dial. If not, write the following fictitious birth weights: Josh.2kg, Esme.kg, Katya 2.kg, Saheed.kg. Help chn to mark them on their dials. Where is.2kg on this dial? Nearer to kilograms or kilograms? What does the first little mark after kg represent? And the next? What does the mark just before kilograms represent? How can we find 2. kilograms really easily? Up for a challenge? Josh has put on.kg since he was born. How heavy is he now? Katya has put on.2kg, what weight is she now? Help chn to count on in tenths to find the new weights. Now it s the children s turn: Chn practise reading weights off dials, recording their results in a table to show a baby s gain in weight. Go round the group and mark their entries in the table, e.g. initially after the first three weights. If chn cope well, ask them how much weight the baby put on between each weigh-in. Things to remember Remember that there are ten tenths in a whole, and we can write tenths as a fraction or a decimal. Ask chn to write six tenths both as fraction and as decimal. What weight is. kilograms more than four kilograms?. kilograms less than kilograms? You may want to add something that has emerged from the activity. This may refer to misconceptions or mistakes made. Resources Picture of baby weighing scales (see child instructions) Baby s weight table Outcomes. Chn can read scales marked in steps of.kg. 2. Chn begin to count up to find a difference between multiples of.kg. ex-support_meas-data_2
Baby weigh-in Work in pairs Things you will need: Baby s weight table A pencil What to do: Read the baby s weight at each age. Write each weight in your own copy of the table. At birth month old 2 months old months old months old months old months old How much weight did the baby put on between each weigh-in? Learning outcomes: I can read scales marked in steps of.kg. I am beginning to count up to find a difference between multiples of.kg. ex-support_meas-data_2

Focus of activity: Converting grams to kilograms. Weighty conversions Activity 2 Working together: conceptual understanding Show chn some kitchen scales with a dial marked in steps of g. How many grams are in one kilogram? Add g weights, one at a time to the scales, pointing out where the needle moves to each time. Point out that ten of these weights are the same as one kilogram, so one g weight is one tenth of one kilogram. Write g =.kg. Work together to complete the following table: Grams Kilograms g.kg 2g g g g g g 8g g g Count round the scale in steps of.kg from to at least 2kg. Place an item on the scales which weighs between kg and 2kg, e.g. a book weighing kg and g. This book weighs one kilogram and grams. We can write this weight in kilograms only. Write kg g =.kg. Repeat with another item, e.g. kg g. Up for a challenge? How many millilitres are in one litre? So millilitres is the same as a tenth of a litre. Ask chn to write ml in litres. How many metres are in one kilometre? Ask chn to write km m in kilometres only. Now it s the children s turn: Chn weigh items weighing between g and 2kg on kitchen scales and record the weights in grams (or kilograms and grams) as on the scales, and in kilograms only. Go round the group and mark their conversions as they do them, e.g. initially after three examples. Make sure that they are not writing kg g for examples as.kg. If chn cope well, ask them to convert 2. litres to millilitres and.km to metres. Chn may be able to do the easier activity on Day of the weekly plan. ex-support_meas-data_2
Things to remember Remember that there are grams in a kilogram, and one tenth of a kilogram is grams. Sometimes it is useful to write a mass or weights in grams and sometimes it s more helpful in kilograms. We can do either now! Ask chn questions such as: What is one tenth of a kilogram? What is three tenths of a kilogram? They write the answer in kilograms and then in grams. You may want to add something that has emerged from the activity. This may refer to misconceptions or mistakes made. Resources Kitchen scales marked in steps of g with scale up to at least 2kg g gram weights Items weighing between g and 2kg Outcomes. Chn can convert between grams and kilograms (to one decimal place). 2. Chn begin to convert between millilitres and litres, and between metres and kilometres (both to one decimal place). ex-support_meas-data_2
Weighty conversions Activity 2 Work in pairs Things you will need: Kitchen scales Items weighing between g and 2kg A pencil What to do: Weigh each of the items. Write down the name of the item and its weight in grams or kilograms and grams if it weighs more than kilogram. Also write the weight in kilograms only. Lunchbox kg 2g.2kg Pencil case g.kg Laptop Convert 2. litres to millilitres. Convert.km to metres. Learning outcomes: I can convert between grams and kilograms (to one decimal place). I am beginning to convert between millilitres and litres, and between metres and kilometres (both to one decimal place). ex-support_meas-data_2
