1 Grade 12 Geography World Issues Unit 3 Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs was developed in 1943 by Abraham Maslow to explain human need. It is a very practical and easy to understand theory. Most people can recognize some personal feature or identify a personal experience. The most basic human needs are found at the base of the pyramid. As one moves up to higher levels of the pyramid, the needs become complex capabilities as humans strive for consciousness, wisdom and self-actualization. The upper level represents what each one of us was born to do. Quality of Life Standard of Living The quantity of good and services consumed by a person or a group. Quality of Life The degree of well being felt by a person or group of persons? Psychological aspect How people feel about their lives? Quality includes environmental, social, political factors and personal income

2 Needs What is required to survive Essentials such as food, health, water, shelter, sanitation and education Wants What drives people to secure improvements to their lives once the basic needs are met Improvements to basic needs such as good quality and regular supplies of food, clean and safe water, good quality housing, clean clothes, additional job opportunities, more consumer goods NOTE There is NO international agreement pertaining to?
