Purpose The Board is committed to promoting wellness through a balance of proper nutrition and regular physical activity as part of the total learning environment and to fostering a school environment that helps students learn and maintain healthy eating and lifestyle habits. Good nutrition and physical activity are essential for students to perform physical and mental tasks well and achieve lifelong health and well-being. A responsible approach to nutrition and physical activity, including foods and beverages available to students during the school day, nutrition education, opportunities for physical activity, and other school-based activities designed to promote student wellness are important factors in promoting healthy weight maintenance and reducing the risk of many chronic diseases. Goals of the Student Wellness Policy shall be considered in planning school-based activities. Administrators, teachers, food service personnel, students, parents/guardians, and community members shall be encouraged to serve as positive role models through District programs, communications and outreach efforts. The District shall support the efforts of parents/guardians to provide a healthy diet and daily physical activity for children by communicating relevant information through various methods.

Definitions Wellness Committee Board appointed committee comprised of a representative of the school board, District administration, school food authority, students, parents/guardians, and the public. Serves as an advisory committee regarding the Student Wellness Policy and is responsible for the development of the Student Wellness Policy recommended to the school board for adoption. Competitive s s, snacks and beverages offered during the day other than through the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Program including a la carte, vending machines, school stores, classroom parties and holiday celebrations. 3. Authority The Board authorizes the Superintendent or his/her designee to establish and measure the implementation of the District s Student Wellness Policy designed to optimize the health and well-being of students, and fulfill the requirements of Section 204 of The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 (Public Law ). To ensure the health and well-being of all students, the Board establishes that the District shall provide to students: A comprehensive nutrition program providing varied and nutritious food choices consistent with federal and state requirements. Access, at reasonable cost, to foods and beverages that meet established nutritional guidelines. Opportunities for developmentally appropriate physical activity during the school day. Curriculum and programs for grades K-12 designed to educate students about proper nutrition and lifelong physical activity, in accordance with State Board of Education curriculum regulations and academic standards. A curriculum that includes the kinesthetic approach to instruction.

Delegation of Responsibility The Superintendent or his/her designee shall be responsible to monitor District schools, programs, and curriculum to ensure compliance with this policy, related policies and established guidelines or administrative regulations. Each building principal or designee shall report to the Superintendent or his/her designee regarding compliance in his/her school. Staff members responsible for programs related to student wellness shall report to the superintendent or his/her designee regarding the status of such programs. The Superintendent or his/her designee shall annually report to the Board on District compliance with law and policies related to student wellness. The report may include: Assessment of school environment regarding student wellness issues. Recommendations for policy and/or program revisions. The Superintendent or his/her designee shall provide an assurance that District guidelines for reimbursable meals are not less restrictive than the federal regulations and guidelines issued to schools in accordance with federal law annually. When possible, the District shall seek available funding and outside programs to enhance student wellness. The District shall provide appropriate communication to all staff on the components of the Student Wellness Policy. 5. Goals Goals of the Student Wellness Policy shall be considered in planning school-based activities. Nutrition Education 1. The goal of nutrition education is to teach, encourage and support healthy eating by students. Promoting student health and nutrition enhances readiness for learning and increases student achievement. 2. Nutrition education shall be provided within the health education program in accordance with State Board of Education curriculum regulations and the academic standards for Health, Safety and Physical Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences. 3. Nutrition education shall extend beyond the school environment by engaging and involving families and communities.

4 School Meals/Competitive s/school Eating Environment 1. s available in District schools during the school day shall be offered to students with consideration for promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity. 2. s provided through the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs shall comply with federal nutrition standards under the School Meals Initiative. 3. District schools shall provide a clean, safe meal environment with adequate space, as defined by the District, for eating and serving school meals. 4. Students shall have access to hand washing or sanitizing before meals and snacks. 5. Meal periods shall be scheduled at appropriate hours, as defined by the District, providing students with adequate time to eat. 6. Nutrition content of school meals shall be available to students and parents/guardians. 7. Competitive foods available to students in District schools shall comply with the established nutrition guidelines, as listed in the Administrative Guidelines. 8. Fundraising projects shall be encouraged to be supportive of healthy eating and student wellness. 9. District will discourage the use of food as a reward or punishment. Physical Education and Physical Activity 1. Quality physical education instruction that promotes lifelong physical activity and provides instruction in the skills and knowledge necessary for lifelong participation shall be provided. 2. A physical education program consistent with State Board of Education curriculum regulations and Health, Safety and Physical Education academic standards shall be developed and implemented. 3. Appropriate professional development shall be provided for physical education staff and for all professional staff members in accordance with the physical education and health curriculum review that will begin in the 06/07 school year. 4. Students shall be active to the extent that the curriculum allows during a physical education class. Documented medical conditions and disabilities shall be accommodated during class. 5. Safe and adequate equipment, facilities and resources shall be provided for physical education courses. A physical and social environment that encourages safe and enjoyable activity for all students shall be maintained. 6. Students shall be encouraged to participate in a variety of ageappropriate physical activities designed to achieve optimal health, wellness, fitness, and performance benefits.

5 7. District schools shall provide opportunities for developmentally appropriate physical activity during the school day for all students. 8. District schools shall seek to partner with parents/guardians and community members to institute programs that support physical activity. 9. The School District prohibits physical activity from being used as a form of punishment. 10. The District recognizes that walking and biking are valued physical activities. The District shall cooperate with local municipalities, public safety agencies, police departments, and community organizations to develop and maintain safe walking and biking opportunities. School Meals The USDA School Meals Initiative 7CFR 210 and 220 School Lunch Standards apply to all foods offered. In addition, school meals will offer: A minimum of 2 fresh fruits and vegetables A selection of whole grains will be available daily At least two reimbursable lunches offered weekly will have no more than 30% of calories from fat and less than 10% of calories from saturated fat. Beverages will include: Low fat milk, unflavored and flavored Unflavored non fat milk Unflavored reduced fat milk will be available upon request Meals will feature a variety of ageappropriate healthy choices that are tasty, attractive, and of high quality and served at the proper temperature. School meals will be prepared in a way that maximizes nutrient density and reduces fat and sodium. In addition to maintaining measures previously achieved, the following criteria will be met: Items will provide <200 calories per serving At least 75% of packages will be in single serving sizes At least 50% of grains available will be whole grains A minimum of 2 fruits and 2 vegetables will be offered daily Items that provide >2 grams of fiber per serving will be available daily A minimum of 50% of the beverages offered will be: Water, unflavored 100%fruit juice (not to exceed 12 oz.) Milk, unflavored 1% or nonfat, or flavored 1% milk (not to exceed 16 oz.) 8 Physical Activity Students will be encouraged to participate in a variety of age appropriate physical activities designed to achieve optimal health, wellness, fitness, and performance benefits. Physical activity will be integrated as part of the regular curriculum, whenever possible, throughout the school day. Elementary (K-5) students will have scheduled recess during the school day. Schools will encourage involvement in extra curricular sports or intramurals. Schools, parents and community members will partner, when possible, to provide educational programs that support physical fitness The district will support the use of school facilities for community sponsored physical activities. The district will maintain a physical and social environment that encourages safe activity for all students. In addition to maintaining measures previously achieved, the district will: Provide parents with information that encourages physical activity outside of the school day. Provide opportunities to volunteers to sponsor fitness activities during lunch recess. Provide opportunities for community members to conduct after school fitness activities. Discourage extended periods of student inactivity (two hours or more). Encourage the incorporation of PANA related activities when possible. The school nurse will analyze Body Mass Index (BMI) data and consult with parents/guardians to monitor students at risk. Nutritional information of prepackaged and commercially prepared foods will be displayed. In addition to maintaining measures previously achieved, the following criteria will be met: Non-food items will comprise at least 25% of all fundraising activities Items will provide <200 calories per serving All packages will be in single serving sizes s of Minimal Nutritional Value (USDA regulation) will not be available anytime during the school day s will not contain added sugar as the first ingredient Total fat will be <35% of the total calories Saturated fat will be <10% of the total calories Sugar content will be <35% by weight and added sugar will not be listed as the first ingredient Items will contain minimal to no trans fatty acids. 10 Source of Competitive Classroom Parties/Holiday Celebrations Classroom parties will offer minimal amount of foods (maximum 2-3 items) that contain added sugar as the first ingredient and will provide the following: Fresh fruits and vegetables Water, 100% fruit juice or 2%, 1% or non-fat milk Peanut/tree nut free safe selections Parents will be encouraged to provide foods that support the above criteria. Each school will have a suggested party list to assist them in providing healthy food and beverage choices.
