2 feature WEIGHT LOSS COMPANY loves In 1961, a 38-year-old homemaker from Queens in New York was desperate to lose weight. She had lost over 22kg with the help of an obesity clinic at the New York City Health Department, but she wanted to lose more. She decided to invite six overweight friends to her home to talk about weight loss. They had such a good time that they returned the next week, bringing three of their friends along. More people came as the weeks went on and, within two months, 40 people had gathered in the woman s apartment. With all that support, it is no wonder she lost 33kg. Her name was Jean Nidetch, and in 1963 she turned those informal meetings into a business. Weight Watchers was born. More than 50 years later, an estimated 1 million people worldwide meet weekly to help each other lose weight. The support factor Although each person s weight-loss experience is unique, there s commonality in our efforts to shed kilos. Meeting attendance is the foundation of Weight Watchers because members can find support from Coaches and fellow members who are facing similar challenges. Members benefit from meetings by learning what they need to do, talking about what works, laughing about what doesn t, and giving and receiving support and encouragement. It s OK to remain quiet in meetings and keep your experiences to yourself. Just by listening to other members revelations, you might find you ve been in similar circumstances and feel relief in knowing others have faced similar challenges. Support doesn t just have to be face-to-face, either. You can find others just like you on the Weight Watchers online communities and social media, and you can contact one of our Coaches online or call whenever you need a motivation boost, or have a question. But you can find support outside of Weight Watchers, too, if you ask for help from family, friends and co-workers. Try this strategy to get the encouragement you need: Plan for the specific help you want or need Do you want compliments, tempting foods removed from view or an exercise buddy? It s easier to be clear if you have thought things out in advance. 2

Ask for help Ask your significant other to keep unhealthy snacks in another cupboard, ask your mother to look after the kids and find a friend to exercise with you and keep you motivated. show others how your new lifestyle will benefit them Tell your kids that you re giving up the family s nightly ice cream indulgence so you ll have more energy to participate in activities with them. Plan a fun, active holiday you can work towards that will support and reward your weight-loss efforts. Be prepared to stand up for yourself Even if it seems that your friends are encouraging you to eat unhealthy foods with them, tell them no thank you and that you d appreciate them respecting your healthy food choices. You don t have to face weight-loss obstacles alone. If you don t feel comfortable seeking out support at the meetings or with friends and family, search our Message Boards and post a question on a board that fits your lifestyle and weight loss. 3
4 3 news bites the latest research & TIPS Friends or frenemies? Have you noticed how your eating habits change depending on your dinner dates? Research shows women who dine together tend to mimic each other s healthy eating behaviour to the point where they eat about the same amount and even take bites at similar times. Whereas eating with a familiar friend or partner can have the opposite effect and lead to shared overindulgence. So speak to your loved ones about your journey and watch out for trigger friends or eating situations. 2 1 Don t go it alone No matter what your goals in life are, support networks physical or online are crucial to achieving them. And your weight loss journey is no exception! Surround yourself with friends, local support groups and teams or online communities that share a similar goal. Knowing that you are not alone and having accountability will inspire you to keep trying and eventually succeed. You will also learn that the seemingly impossible is possible. Don t go it alone! 5 PROFILE kayelene chevalierdonoghue A surprise ticket overseas was Kayelene s tipping point to join Weight Watchers. The suitcase she took on that trip ended up weighing as much as she d lost: 17kg. After I got married, I started putting on a kilo here and there, and I was buying clothes in bigger and bigger sizes. I got good at hiding myself, mainly under baggy black clothing. The turning point, though, was when my husband planned an overseas trip as a surprise. Our family loves music, and it was the trip of a lifetime to Austria to see where The Sound of Music was filmed. Instead of being excited, I was terrified. I knew that, at my size, sitting in a plane on a long-haul flight would be very uncomfortable, so I decided it was time to lose weight. Initially I wasn t keen on the idea of going t o meetings. I was so embarrassed about my weight and I didn t want to confess that to other people. But I did go along and that was an achievement in itself it was my first step towards losing weight. And I ended up really enjoying the meetings. I hardly missed a week and I picked up a new tip every time I went. I consistently lost weight from the start. I never felt hungry if anything, I ate more than ever before, but the right kind of food. I love experimenting with new recipes from before LOST 17kg IN 6 MONTHS the magazine and cookbooks. One of my goals was to cook two new recipes each week and that s still something I do now. My family and I eat a much wider variety of meals these days. One of the best tips I learnt from one of my Leaders was to find a reason to exercise. It resonated with me because I d never really exercised and I needed to get motivated. I decided to walk to the shops to get groceries instead of taking the car. It was a one-hour round trip and I did it almost every day. Once I d found a purpose, I started to enjoy exercise and now I walk because I like it. Since reaching Goal, I ve become a lot fitter. I used to be a bit of a couch potato and now I feel like I m participating in life. For so many years, I had to shop in plus-size stores, and even when I lost all the weight I kept going into those shops. The clothes always looked awful and it was because none of them fit me! When the day of our trip arrived and we checked in our luggage, there was a funny coincidence I had lost as much weight as my suitcase weighed. I d gone from a person hesitant to go to a Weight Watchers meeting to becoming a Leader myself! I enjoy helping other people. I ve dropped five dress sizes from 18 to 8 so I m living proof that it works! 5
6 RECIPE PEAR & CRANBERRY BROWN BETTY ProPoints VALUES PER SERVE SERVES: 4 PREP: 10 MINS COOK: 20 MINS 2 cups (140g) stale breadcrumbs made from high-fibre wholemeal bread 2 tbs Weight Watchers Canola Spread ¼ cup (55g) firmly packed brown sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 820g can pears in natural juice, drained, thinly sliced ¼ cup (35g) dried cranberries Preheat oven to 200 C or 180 C fanforced. Place breadcrumbs 1 in a large bowl. Rub in spread until coarse Filling & Healthy foods are marked with a green triangle. These foods help fill you up and keep you healthy. crumbs form. Stir in sugar and cinnamon. Place half the pears and half the 2 cranberries in four 1-cup (250ml) capacity ramekins. Sprinkle over half the breadcrumb mixture. Repeat layers, finishing with breadcrumb mixture. Place ramekins on a baking tray. Bake 3 for 20 mins or until golden and heated through. Serve. NOTE: You can use canned pie apple instead of pear and frozen raspberries instead of cranberries. The recipe will then have 5 ProPoints values per serve. SERVE WITH: Weight Watchers Creamy Vanilla Ice Cream. Add 1 ProPoints value for ½ x 145ml tub per serve. 6
