12 Cross Contamination This happens when the bad germs present on our dirty hands get into the cooked or from other raw food that already have germs in them. We can protect ourselves from falling sick if we practice food hygiene. It can happen at any time when food is being cooked and served

35 What are Pests? Creatures which spoil our food and cause food borne diseases are Pests

36 How do Pests Transmit Disease?

37 How do Pests Transmit Disease? They live in dirty places like garbage dumps and kitchen and bathroom drains. They collect many disease causing microbes on their bodies and in their stomachs and contaminate uncovered foods, utensils and other surfaces. They spread diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid fever, intestinal worms and food poisoning.

39 What is Waste? Anything which we throw away is waste. For eg. Food, leaves, newspapers, bottles, used tissue papers, wrappers, disposable diapers etc. We must throw the waste in the dustbin. Dustbin should be covered

40 Class Activity 3: DUNK THE JUNK Let us learn to dispose off the waste properly. Dispose the waste such as wrappers, peels of fruit like banana, leaves, pencil shavings, used tissue etc into the green bin and all other waste into the blue bin. Objective: Dispose the waste as Biodegradable and Non-biodegradable after sorting, It should be disposed off in labeled waste baskets.

41 VERMICULTURE OR ORGANIC COMPOST OPTION FOR DISPOSAL OF BIODEGRADABLE WASTE Peels, stalks, seeds and other inedible or spoilt portions of food can attract flies and give off a foul odor if it is not disposed off immediately. This organic waste or biomass is biodegradable and nutrients in the waste can be returned to Mother Nature by a simple process called Vermiculture.

42 VERMICULTURE OR ORGANIC COMPOST YOU CAN ALSO PREPARE ORGANIC COMPOST FROM THE WASTE.

43 DID YOU KNOW? A special breed of earthworms feed on our garbage and breaks it down in its gut into simple substances which can be easily assimilated by plants. Fruits and vegetables grown on such soils are healthier, tastier and more nutritious than those grown on farms fertilized by chemical fertilizers. Such foods are called Organic and fetch a higher market price.
