1 VALENCE PRIMARY SCHOOL Fd and Drink Plicy INTRODUCTION Valence Primary Schl is dedicated t prmting healthy lifestyles and prviding an envirnment that prmtes healthy eating and drinking, enabling pupils t make infrmed chices abut the fd they eat and drink. This will be achieved thrugh a whle schl apprach t fd and nutritin dcumented in this plicy. The plicy was frmulated thrugh cnsultatin between members f staff, gvernrs, parents and pupils. The Whle Schl Apprach A whle schl apprach t fd is required t enable pupils and parents t make psitive changes. Clear, reliable and psitive messages need t be given t the whle schl cmmunity abut healthy eating and gd nutritin within schl. FOOD POLICY CO-ORDINATOR This plicy and healthy lifestyle strategy is c-rdinated by leading staff including members f the Senir Leadership Team, the Science Team and the P.E. Lead. POLICY AIMS The main aims are: T enable pupils t make healthy dietary chices thrugh the prvisin f evidence-based educatin and the develpment f apprpriate skills and attitudes. T prvide healthy dietary chices thrughut the schl day. These aims will be addressed thrugh the fllwing areas: EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES In healthy eating, as in all ther areas f the curriculum we recgnise the value f the individual and strive t prvide equal access f pprtunity fr all. CURRICULUM Fd and nutritin is taught at an apprpriate level thrughut each key stage. The schl fllws the Natinal Curriculum which states that Healthy Eating must be taught in Science and Design and Technlgy (D&T). This includes the teaching f cking skills in D&T. Science Pupils study a range f tpics that prvide an pprtunity t learn abut the types f fd and drink available, their nutritinal cmpsitin, digestin and the functin f different nutrients in cntributing t health and hw the bdy respnds t exercise. Children s learning abut living things includes grwing plants which are prepared and eaten in D&T. In additin, pupils learn abut care f their bdies, including their teeth, and the impact different dietary chices as they grw and age. 1

2 Design and technlgy (DT) Pupils are encuraged t discver new fds thrugh curriculum based tasting sessins. The pprtunity t learn abut where fd cmes frm is taught in each year grup thrugh practical wrk with fd, including grwing fd plants in science, preparatin and cking f mstly savury dishes and designing and making fd prducts. Much f the wrk cvered links with their science tpics. Crss curricular links Physical Educatin (PE) Pupils t be made aware f the imprtance f a healthy diet and t recgnise the links between healthy diet and physical activity fr bth their shrt term and lng-term wellbeing. Persnal, Scial and Health Educatin (PSHE) Encurages yung peple t take respnsibility fr their wn health and well-being and teaches them hw t develp a healthy lifestyle. This area als addresses issues such as bdy image and the impact f legal cnsumables that may cause harm i.e. energy drinks, alchl and caffeine. Pupils can discuss issues f interest t yung peple. PHSE Resurces fr the teaching f a healthy diet in PSHE have been selected t cmplement the delivery f the curriculum in ther subject areas, particularly science. Resurces are available t all staff via the staff intranet. Bks are available fr pupils in the library and Healthy Diet tips are shared n ur Schl Website fr all stakehlders e.g. Hw t Make Healthy Packed Lunches. Religius educatin (RE) Pupils experience and learn abut different fds thrugh celebratin f a range f religius festivals and cultural events. Teaching methds Effective teaching requires pupils t develp their understanding f healthy eating issues and apprpriate skills and attitudes t assist them in making infrmed decisins. Teaching methds adpted in the classrm ffer a rich variety f pprtunities fr participatry learning and include debating issues, grup discussins and practical wrk with fd. These decisins are made at teachers planning meetings. All staff have a key rle in accurately shaping pupils knwledge, skills and attitudes regarding what cnstitutes a healthy diet. It is imprtant that all staff are familiar with healthy dietary guidelines. Resurces Resurces fr the teaching f Healthy Eating have been selected t cmplement the delivery f the curriculum in subject areas. The range f materials used is available fr review n request t the Head teacher. Bks n Healthy Eating are available fr pupils in the library. Extra-curricular activities The schl aims t prvide a ckery club, develping basic skills in planning, preparatin and cking healthy meals and an understanding f basic fd hygiene. Pupils are invlved in grwing fds in the utdr garden areas, develping an understanding f where fd cmes frm. Frm time t time, visits may be planned t lcal alltments, supermarkets r farms. 2

3 FOOD AND DRINK PROVISION THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY We aim t prvide a service that is cnsistent with ur teaching f Healthy Eating, thus enabling pupils t put int practice their learning. All fd prvided t pupils during the schl day meets the Schl Fd Standards which became mandatry in all maintained schls, academies and free schls frm January These can be fund at. Extended Schl Prvisin Breakfast is an imprtant meal that shuld prvide 25% f a child s energy requirement and cntributes significantly t their vitamin and mineral requirements. The schl perates a breakfast club that prvides a nutritius meal fr pupils befre the schl day. The breakfast menu includes lw sugar cereals, fruit, tast, milk and water. In additin, we have teamed up with an rganisatin called Magic Breakfast, t ffer free breakfast snacks t all pupils. A Bagel Bar will be in the playgrund every day. We aim t ensure that all pupils start the day with smething nutritius in their stmachs. The schl als ffers a meal fr after schl club children. Breakfast and After Schl clubs meet the Schl Fd Standards. SCHOOL LUNCHES The schl aims t prvide pupils with the pprtunity t eat a healthy balanced Meal. The fd is prepared by the catering team and meets the Schl Fd Standards fr Schl lunches. Pupils are encuraged t have a schl meal prvided by the catering service and free schl meals are prvided t all pupils wh are entitled t them. Healthy ptins are prmted at lunchtime. A sugar smart schl As a schl we take the fllwing steps t ensure that we are cntributing t the reductin f sugar intake f pupils and their families: Display bards f the amunts f sugar in a range f drinks cmpared with maximum daily sugar intake Cking lessns r afterschl clubs with the emphasis n savury dishes r lw sugar recipes Prmting ral health - fr free resurces yu can visit the Oral Health Fundatin s website: r cntact the Oral Health Team fr supprt n hp@clch.nhs.uk Encuraging families t register with a dentist and arranging dental checks in schl. Running cmpetitins that encurage families t raise awareness f healthy hme chices. Prviding free water and milk at meals. We d nt permit any ther drinks. Sweets and cakes fr birthdays are nt permitted. Snacks The schl understands that snacks can be an imprtant part f the diet f yung peple and can cntribute psitively twards a balanced diet. Fresh fruit and milk are ffered t children in the lwer schl during the mrning. Older children are permitted t bring fruit r a healthy snack fr playtime. Drinks during the Schl Day The Natinal Nutritinal Standards fr Healthy Schl Lunches recmmend that drinking water shuld be available t all pupils, everyday, and free f charge. 3

4 The schl agrees with this recmmendatin and prvides a free supply f drinking water thrughut the day. In additin, the schl prvides free milk at lunchtimes t all children, n request, in rder that a healthy drink chice is available. Packed lunches The schl encurages families t prvide children with packed lunches that cmplement the Schl Fd Standards. This is achieved by prmting and rewarding healthy packed lunch decisins. Only milk r water are permitted with packed lunches, bth are prvided free t children. Special events Fd prvided fr special events e.g. Head teacher tea party and class celebratins are representative f a healthy diet and encurage pupils t make balanced chices. This always includes at least ne fresh item (fruit r vegetable), a savury item, a sweet item and a drink. Fd is nt used as a reward. Children are nt permitted t bring sweets and/r cakes in t schl n birthdays. Use f Fd as a Reward The schl des nt encurage the regular eating f sweets r ther fds high in sugar r fat, especially as a reward fr gd behaviur, end f term treats r ther achievements. Other methds f psitive reinfrcement are used in schl. PROMOTING HEALTH EATING MESSAGE THROUGH THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT Rle f Staff It is the respnsibility f the Schl Leaders t: Ensure that all staff and parent/carers are infrmed abut the Fd and Drink Plicy, and that the plicy is implemented effectively. Ensure that all staff are given sufficient training, s that they can teach and wrk effectively with pupils. Liaise with external agencies regarding the healthy eating educatin prgramme and ensure that all adults wh wrk with children n these issues are aware f the schl plicy and wrk within this framewrk. Liaise with caterers. Mnitr teaching and learning abut healthy eating. Oversee the cntent f the curriculum t ensure that all pupils have the pprtunity t learn abut healthy eating. Encurage psitive rle mdels amngst staff. Rles f Parents/Carers The schl is aware that the primary rle mdel in children s healthy eating educatin lies with parents/carers. We wish t build a psitive and supprtive relatinship with the parents/carers f children at ur schl thrugh mutual understanding, trust and cperatin. In prmting this bjective, we will: Infrm parents/carers abut the schl Fd and Drink plicy and healthy eating practice. Infrm parents/carers abut the best practice knwn abut healthy eating s that parents/carers can supprt the key messages being given t children at schl. Discuss with parents/carers hw we can jintly supprt their child if they are nt eating well at lunchtimes. 4

5 Rle f Gvernrs The gverning bdy is respnsible fr mnitring the Fd and Drink Plicy. The gvernrs supprt the Head teacher in fllwing guidelines frm external agencies. Gvernrs infrm with parents/carers abut the plicy as required. Quality f the Envirnment The eating envirnment and scial aspects f meal times Meal times prvide pprtunities fr children t learn abut and try new fds, and t develp their scial skills. The schl aims t make the dining areas user friendly by; Mnitring nise levels Giving the pprtunity t eat fd withut being rushed Having apprpriate furniture and seating Staff supervisin Appealing presentatin Prviding psitive messages abut fd SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS In healthy dietary educatin, as in all ther areas f the curriculum, we recgnise the value f the individual and strive t prvide equal access f pprtunity fr all. Special diets fr religius and ethnic grups The schl prvides fd in accrdance with pupils religius beliefs and cultural practices. Vegetarians and vegans We ffer a vegetarian ptin daily n ur Schl Meal Menu. When necessary the schl als prvides a vegan ptin. Fd allergy and intlerance Individual care plans are created fr pupils with fd allergies. These dcument symptms and adverse reactins, actins t be taken in an emergency, and emergency cntact details. Schl catering staff are made aware f any fd allergies/fd intlerance and requests fr special diets and facilities are agreed in cnsultatin with families. FOOD SAFETY Apprpriate fd safety precautins are taken when fd is prepared r stred. These vary depending n the fd n ffer and include ensuring that adequate strage and washing facilities are available; that fd handlers underg apprpriate fd hygiene training; and that suitable equipment and prtective clthing are available. Any fd safety hazards are identified and cntrlled. We cnsult ur lcal Envirnmental Health Department abut legal requirements. MONITORING AND EVALUATION The schl will evaluate the impact f the Fd and Drink Plicy by feedback received frm parents and gvernrs. This plicy will be reviewed annually. Review Date: Feb
