2 Page 2 Diet and Nutrition Hitting the Sweet Spot Is your weakness for cookies and ice cream sabotaging your weight loss efforts? It could be in your genes. Appetite is complex, with biological and environmental factors all influencing our food and beverage choices. New research also suggests that a predisposition to liking certain tastes, such as sweet or savoury, could be passed along from generation to generation. So if your grandmother loved sweets, you could very well inherit the same taste receptor genes which can make it difficult if you re trying to watch your calorie intake. The key is not to forgo your favourite forbidden foods forever. Indeed, depriving yourself of your special treats can lead to full-out bingeing on them at another time. A little splurge now and then won t hurt. Just eat a smaller portion, savour every delicious bite, and burn it off with exercise if needed. Here are other ways to satisfy your sweet tooth. Eat more pears and apples. Not only are they naturally sweet, they contain a lot of water and fibre, which take up more space in your gut, making you feel full longer. When consumed with their skins left on, they also provide insoluble fibre, which keeps your digestive system healthy and. Pass up on the artificial flavours. If you re going to eat a cookie, make it one made of high quality, whole ingredients. Low calorie products that are made of artificial sweeteners can actually cause you to overeat. That s because eating something that s sweet, but artificially low in calories doesn t completely satisfy the reward/satiety signals in your brain like the full calorie versions do. So you ll compensate by eating more. Don t grocery shop when stressed. One study found that people who shop when frazzled tend to buy lower-quality foods for comfort eating. Watch out for the checkout lane, which is usually stocked with candy and chocolate bars to tempt people while they wait. Another study also showed that being frazzled can change the way food tastes. So when you re stressed, that snack you usually love won t taste as sweet and you ll want more. Don t keep sweet treats around. It s much harder to resist eating a few calorie-laden cookies if you have big bags of them in your pantry.
