1 Extensive myocardial metabolic PET/CT Appointment time You have been scheduled for PET-CT scan. The appointment will take 2-4 hours, of which part will be spent in bed rest. Imaging time is about 30 minutes. Preparation for examination You may not have anything to eat for at least 12 hours prior to your scan. You may not have gum, mints, or candy either. You may drink plain water. Your blood glucose level must be below 7 mmol/l. Avoid exercise and physical activity prior to the scan. You need to take all jewelry and other metal accessories off as these may interfere with the imaging. This test is generally not carried out on pregnant women. If there is any possibility that you are pregnant, please contact us before your appointment. You may take any medication that has been prescribed for you by your physician, with plain water only. The substance used in this examination seeks into the tissues of the body that use sugar. Normally, the cardiac muscle uses a lot of sugar, but it can also use fatty acids. A special diet can be used to decrease the normal sugar intake of the myocardium to provide the optimal condition for imaging. The diet contains plenty of proteins but very little carbohydrates. A failed diet may hinder interpretation of the results, so you must follow the diet carefully. On the day preceding the examination, you must keep a meal diary (ATTACHMENT). Diet instructions on the day preceding the examination: You may eat: Non-marinated meats, full meat sausages, eggs, bacon Hard cheese Oil and margarine Water Sodas with no sugar Coffee and tea without sugar and milk Artificial sweeteners Do not eat: Foods that contain carbohydrates or sugar Any dairy products (except hard cheese), fruit juice, sodas containing sugar Bread, cereal, cookies, potato chips, pastries, sweets, nuts Cold cuts Rice, pasta, potatoes Any vegetables Chewing gum Alcohol Please write down your meals and meal times in the attached diary. Patients with diabetes: You need to fast for at least 4 hours. Take your regular diabetes medication in the morning of the examination day. Just in case, please bring your medicines with you to the examination.
2 Examination This examination is used to evaluate the viability of the cardiac muscle or to assess an infection process in the heart. A radioactive sugar derivative is used as the contrast agent. To slow down sugar metabolism, you will be directed to stay in bed rest for 1 2 hours. While resting, you are not allowed to move, read or use a phone. An intravenous catheter will be placed into your arm and a small amount of contrast agent will be administered via the catheter. The imaging will begin after an hour and it will last for approximately 30 minutes. Metabolic PET imaging also includes a CT (computed tomography) scan of the organ structure which enables us to accurately locate You will be asked to lie on your back for the scans. Scanning is painless. Nb! As an extra examination, a myocardial perfusion imaging is performed. You will receive a separate appointment on a different day for this. This examination has separate preparation instructions. After the examination You can eat and drink as normal. Drink extra fluids and empty your bladder frequently after the exam in order to clear the tracer from your body more quickly. Breast-feeding mothers should pump and discard milk for one day after the scan Other things to note You can get the results from your attending physician. If you can t come to the examination, please inform us as soon as possible. A separate fee will be charged for examinations which have not been cancelled or used. These instructions are on the HUS website: > Examinations >
