Weight Loss Surgery East Carolina University Information Session

What is weight loss surgery? Gastric Bypass (GBP) A surgery that creates a smaller stomach which in most cases allows people to eat less and lose weight. A surgical method to help people lose weight when all other methods have failed.

Our Bariatric Surgeons Dr. Christian Mann, MD Clinical Associate Professor Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Dr. Jeffrey Wannares, MD Clinical Assistant Professor Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery

Gastric Bypass What types of weight loss surgery do we offer? Sleeve Gastrectomy

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Gastric Bypass (GBP) Restrictive and malabsorptive 70% of excess weight loss is possible.

Restrictive only Sleeve Gastrectomy 60% of excess weight loss is possible

What Surgery is Right for You? The surgeon will discuss which surgery option is most appropriate for you individually Your benefits and overall success from having weight loss surgery will depend on your compliance and progress after surgery

Why have your surgery with ECU? Our surgeons are highly qualified experts. We are involved in research. We have an array of services aimed at providing care to morbidly obese clients and their families. We genuinely want to help you reach your goals.

Tips to be successful during your evaluation: Review and complete your new patient packet of paperwork - provided at this session and must be completed prior to your New Consult with our surgeon or your appointment will be rescheduled. Packets will be given once. Call prior to appointment if you have questions about your paperwork. Keep us updated on your insurance - Bring your insurance card to every appointment related to your weight loss surgery process. If your insurance changes, call our office immediately as your covered benefits may change. Keep your appointments It is very important you keep all scheduled appointments related to your evaluation for weight loss surgery; especially nutrition and psychiatric appointments. Insurance requires appointments to be consistent and consecutive. Bring your support person to your New Consult and DCV/H&P appointment - This will be helpful to ensure your understanding of the program requirements and information before surgery. Smoking and all nicotine related products must be stopped TODAY. You are subject to random testing and surgery will be cancelled if results are positive.

Your Appointments with the Surgeon and the Surgery Practice At your New Patient visit, you will do the following: Turn in your new patient paperwork. Receive your Bariatric Guidebook Have a physical exam completed by your surgeon. Discuss surgery options with surgeon. Receive a Bariatric Patient Guidebook you will need to bring to each appointment thereafter, including nutrition visits. Meet with a Referral Coordinator to have your program requirements explained and you may have some pre-op testing and consults scheduled.

Appointments and testing included in the evaluation process Psychiatric evaluation Nutrition evaluation Endoscopy Bloodwork Chest X-Ray EKG Anesthesia Consult Additional consults & testing may be required for some patients as ordered by your surgeon

Insurance Program Requirements Your insurance company determines some requirements for surgery. Some require a nutrition program before surgery can be submitted. This will mean 4-12 visits with the nutritionist or your PCP prior to surgery. You will be informed of your specific insurance requirements for pre-op nutrition visits by our referral coordinator at your initial visit. All patients will be required to see a Vidant nutritionist at least once before surgery for an evaluation. It is VERY important to keep your appointments as scheduled; rescheduling may mean prolonging your evaluation and/or possibly cause you to have to restart the entire process. If you repeatedly miss appointments or fail to show up for an appointment without notice, you may be dismissed from our bariatric program.

Your Appointments with the Surgeon and the Surgery Practice At your DCV/H&P, you will do the following: Have a physical exam by your Surgeon. Review all evaluations for weight loss surgery. Discuss & decide what surgery option is best for you with your surgeon. Meet with a Financial Counselor. Receive reinforcement of diet teaching. Sign Surgery related paperwork (This does not guarantee approval of your surgery). Your file will be submitted to your insurance after this appointment once all documentation is finalized. This process can take 6-8 weeks. We will contact you when we hear back from your insurance company. If your insurance company denies your request for surgery we will help guide you through the appeal process.

Requirements Prior to Surgery YOU MUST QUIT NICOTINE PRODUCTS! We may require a nicotine test prior to having surgery in order to ensure you have stopped. -Smoking raises the risks associated with surgery. Smokers are more likely to experience anesthesia related complications, infections, heart attack, stroke, pneumonia or death. Any weight gain could result in prolonging, rescheduling, or cancelling your surgery.

Diet Before & After Surgery Before surgery, you need to follow a lowcarbohydrate, high protein diet. You should lose weight during this time. This helps shrink the liver, making your surgeon s job easier. You will need to follow this diet at least 2 weeks. The time frame is determined by your surgeon. After surgery, you will be on a Stage 1 liquid diet for 2 weeks after which your diet will progress to Stage 4, which is a regular diet starting around 6 months post operatively. Your focus will be protein. We will provide further instructions regarding your pre-operative diet at your DCV/H&P appointment.

After Surgery After surgery, all vitamins and medications need to be either CRUSHED, CHEWABLE OR LIQUID FORM for at least your first year after surgery. Please speak with your prescribing doctor or pharmacist to adjust these medications before surgery. *Some medications are NOT safe to crush. You will take vitamins for the rest of your life. Most patients spend $25-50 per month on vitamins.

Follow-Up After Surgery Lifelong commitment. First 2 weeks after surgery, then: 1 month post op. 6 months post op. Yearly until released to PCP by your Surgeon. Lab work checked as required by your Surgeon.

How to Maintain Your Success Surgery gives you the tool to assist with weight loss however, with lack of compliance with diet and exercise, you may regain your weight. Some causes of weight re-gain include lack of exercise, poorly balanced meals, eating processed carbohydrates and drinking carbonated beverages. EXERCISE! You should work up to exercising daily for 30 to 45 minutes. Walking, aerobics, pool exercises and fitness classes are a few options.

Support Groups We encourage you to join a support group prior to surgery and maintain participation with the support group after surgery. Dates: January 25, 2018 April 26, 2018 August 23, 2018 November 29, Moye Blvd from 5:30-6:30 PM. For more information, please visit our website

In conclusion Keep program appointments! HOMEWORK: Review medications with your doctor and/or pharmacist, stop drinking sodas and EXERCISE! You will be contacted by our office to schedule an initial visit with one of our surgeons. You must bring your completed packet in order to be seen.

You will now hear from our financial counselors regarding our Financial Agreement
