1 March/April 2018 Food Services Newsletter What s on the Menu? HS Lunch Menu MS Lunch Menu Elementary Lunch Menu Article written by Annaliessa Visco Coordinated Program in Dietetics Framingham State University Menu Highlights: During the months of March and April we will be focusing on the meat and meat alternates group. Meats and meat alternates are considered protein foods. Protein is essential for adequate growth and development and repair of muscles and tissues. Protein foods also help keep us full. The consumption of a variety of low fat meats and meat alternates (vegetarian options) is encouraged to maintain a healthy diet. Our Food Service program strives to offer a wide variety of low fat meat entrées and vegetarian options. Some of the vegetarian options include bean chili, 3 cheese lasagna, broccoli and cheese quiche, and cheese pizza. Which foods are protein foods? Meat Poultry Seafood Eggs Dairy products Soy products Nuts and seeds Beans and some peas*
2 *Click here for more info Beans and Peas Are Unique Foods What is a meat alternate? Eggs Dairy products Soy products Nuts and seeds Beans and some peas How much protein do I need? Click Here! to see a chart Protein needs are measured in ounces Click Here! to see a chart of what counts as an ounce Why should I choose low fat and vegetarian options? Meats such as fatty cuts of beef, pork, and lamb, hot dogs, sausages, bacon, and lunch meats like bologna and salami are high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Choose these foods less often. The fat content of these foods increases the bad cholesterol in your body and may increase your risk of developing heart disease. These foods are also high in calories and contribute to obesity. Lower fat meats such as lean cuts of beef, chicken, seafood, low fat dairy products, and the other meat alternates (excluding eggs) mentioned above are lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. These should be chosen more often. *To read more about the health benefits of these foods Click Here!
3 Are you or your child a vegetarian? There are some nutrients you may need to be concerned about. They include: Protein Vitamin D Calcium Iron B 12 Zinc *To read more about these nutrients and ways to ensure that you and your child are getting enough Click Here! For a list of top 10 tips for Healthy Vegetarian Eating Click Here! For more information about raising vegetarian children, including recipes, and family meal planning tips Click Here! For information on vegetarian travel and restaurant guides Click Here! Promotions For every $ put on your POS account an additional $20.00 will be credited to that account.
