Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. Indian Health Service (IHS) and Health Canada s First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB). First signed on May 13, 2001 at the World Health Assembly in Geneva Switzerland, and reaffirmed in 2007 Pregnancy care is a particular priority for the SOGC and its Aboriginal Health Initiative Committee (the lead committee working on the guideline) because First Nations, Inuit and Métis comprise the fastest growing segment of the Canadian population, with a birth rate that is nearly double that of the non-aboriginal population, said Dr. Don Wilson, co-chair of the Aboriginal Health Initiative Committee. We know that many Aboriginal women experience poor access to culturally-safe maternal health care, and statistics show that this often leads to poor maternal health outcomes low and high birth weight babies, preterm birth, gestational diabetes, caesarean sections and poor access to specialist care.

Thinking in Indian Indigenous of the genes grounded in place, in a specific environment within a specific ecosystem; knowledge embedded in Indigenous languages and practice. Not part-something, but part of something. Five Principles of Indigeneity (Barreiro, 2012) World Alive Appreciation Reciprocity Balance Sustaining and enhancing a rational way of thinking about life and nature (cultural cognition, ways of knowing, processes of acquiring knowledge, intuition, perception, Belenky s WWK)

Layered Environments of Meaning of the Indigenous Woman s Body Cosmological a cosmology of the body, living a cosmologically meaningful life (Jung in Sabini 2002) Mythological - restoration of sacred knowledge, ceremony, symbol systems, narrative (Creation Story, dream & vision, Traditional Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom-TIKW) Territorial - ecosystems, metaphors of body and landscape Historical - Doctrine of Recovery - decolonization & healing Sociological - kinship, identity, ritualization of youth, needs to increase cultural capital Biological - evolution, epigenetics, macroepigenetics, psychobiology

Intercultural Health Study conducted by the First Nations Centre for Aboriginal Health Research (CAHR) (O Neil et al., 2006; Mignone et al., 2007) The problem is not that Mayan midwives, their clients and families fail to understand the biomedical information about dangers in birth, but rather that this information fails to fit into an already existing social system of understanding birth and birth-related knowledge. (Berry 2006, p. 1958)

Requickening the spirit of our community using the Knowledge,Difference and Power of Birth

Sharing Our Voices, Sharing Our Stories, So That the Generations Continue Nurture initiatives that empower women, especially within the context of reproductive health and childbearing; Encourage and build on community social support, increase community interaction and cohesion and diminish social isolation; Increase the capacity for tribal members to develop community-led and culture-based initiatives; Increase the knowledge of community members and public health staff in communications and concepts regarding age appropriate human sexuality; Provide trustworthy cultural resources to help guide the integration of conscientious cultural Knowledge. g/

Centering Pregnancy Model of Group Prenatal Care St.Regis Mohawk Health Services, Akwesasne Mohawk Community Pregnant mothers have the opportunity to participate in their prenatal care in an open, welcoming environment enriched with the sharing of women s knowledge and experiences. The natural development of friendship and sisterhood promotes secure networks of women supporting women in a nurturing, centered atmosphere echoing the ancient spirit of our clan families. We guide pregnant mothers through the Centering Pregnancy format that integrates health assessment, education and support in a group care setting, using the power of the circle as its basis.

We promote excellence in reproductive health care for Inuit, First Nations, and Métis women. We advocate for the restoration of midwifery education, the provision of midwifery services, and choice of birthplace for all Aboriginal communities consistent with the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. As active members of the Canadian Association of Midwives, we represent the professional development and practice needs of Aboriginal midwives to the responsible health authorities in Canada and the global community.

Cycles of Birth and Rebirth Idioms of tragedy and renewal, displacement and adaptability New skills and technology come with community recovery Cultural revitalization is the foundation 1993 Alaska Maternal Child Health Coalition Midwife as conduit of biological and cultural continuity Legitimacy of parallel systems of knowledge storytelling

We will reawaken the strength of all female life to bring forward the love and medicine from the mother earth we dance upon because we remember the coming faces.
