7 Curriculum vitae The author of this thesis was born on March 1th 1977 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He grew up in Rotterdam and Utrecht, where he graduated at the St. Bonifatius College in In that year he started medical school at Leiden University. During his years at medical school he worked as allocation coordinator for the Eurotransplant International Foundation. In 2004 he attained his medical qualification (cum laude). In 2005, he started surgical training at Medisch Centrum Haaglanden in The Hague (Dr. J.C.A. de Mol van Otterloo and Dr. S.A.G. Meylaerts) and later at Leiden University Medical Centre (Prof. Dr. J.F. Hamming). In 2009, he started the research that led to this thesis under supervision of Prof. Dr. C.J.H. van de Velde at the department of Surgical Oncology of Leiden University Medical Centre, supported by a joint European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) fellowship funded by the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). He presented his work at several international meetings. As a surgical resident, he was selected by the Dutch Society for Gastrointestinal Surgery (NVGIC) for a visiting fellowship in gastrointestinal surgery at the Univer sity Medical Center Mannheim, Germany. After finishing his surgical training in 2013 he further specialised in surgical and gastrointestinal oncology during a one-year fellowship at the Netherlands Cancer Institute-Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam. In September and October 2015, he was a visiting fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA, supported by a grant from the Mammadi & Alireza Soudavar Traveling Fellowship. The author is happily living in The Hague with his wife May and their three children: Anna, Daniël and Willem. He is presently an oncological surgeon at the Alrijne hospital in Leiden and Leiderdorp. 185
