What are the SDGs? NO POVERTY ZERO HUNGER GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING QUALITY EDUCATION GENDER EQUALITY CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE REDUCED INEQUALITIES SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION CLIMATE ACTION LIFE BELOW WATER LIFE ON LAND PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS 17 goals and 169 aspirational targets for sustainable human development Objectives include ending poverty and hunger ensuring healthy lives and quality education combating climate change protecting the global environment Central objec-ve: eradicate extreme poverty from the face of the earth by 2030

Much progress with the Millenium Development Goals (2000) o Half a billion fewer people in extreme poverty o 4 out of 5 children now vaccinated for various diseases o Deaths from malaria down by 25% o Over 600m children in developing countries in primary school However: o Around 1 billion people still live on less than $1.25 a day o 700m do not have enough food o A long way to go with regard to women s rights Central objective of the SDGs: eradicate extreme poverty from the face of the Earth by 2030

End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls Eliminate all harmful practices, (child, early and forced marriage, fgm) Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work Ensure women s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights Reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, access to ownership and control over land Enabling technology, in particular ICTs, to promote the empowerment of women Sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality

Example of analysis: A Guide to SDG Interactions 52 GOAL #2 ZERO HUNGER SDG 2 + SDG 5 TARGETS KEY INTERACTIONS SCORE POLICY OPTIONS 2.1, 2.2 overall SDG 5 Ensuring food and nutrition security reinforces women s empowerment. In turn, women s empowerment is enabling nutrition security due partly to their role in food production and preparation and their greater inclination to spend resources they control on family nutrition and health , 5.a Promoting investment in rural infrastructure, securing equal access to productive resources (including land), and increasing income strengthens women s empowerment and gender equality 2.a 5.b Access to technology is an important lever to enable women s empowerment in agriculture and overall the two means of implementation mutually reinforce each other SDG2 interacts with and reinforces the achievement of SDG5 in many ways: gender equality in access to productive resources gender-equitable investment in rural infrastructure the use of technologies to promote women s empowerment along agricultural value chains Support policies that ensure adequate and sufficient diets for everyone; as well as policies that strengthen women s empowerment in agriculture. Promote equal access to productive resources, rights and services in agriculture can reinforces the synergetic interactions between women s empowerment and food and nutrition security Further explore and invest in in gender-equitable agricultural innovations. Technologies that improve access to assets and resources and save women s time are particularly important for women s empowerment

Scientific review of the targets under the 17 Sustainable Development Goals International Council for Science (ICSU) International Social Science Council (ISSC) A vital contribution by the scientific community Download the report at:

5 GOAL ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS Mary Nyasimi and Linda Peake Gendered inequalities are the most pervasive of all inequalities SDG5 is missing vital economic and social targets on: any reference to women s engagement in wage work full employment equal pay the need for equal access to education, elimination of gender disparities in education Mental and physical health beyond reproduction

What to do? What can we do about raising the profile of women, promoting science among girls at school level, promoting the advancement of women as scientists, in universities, research labs, industry? As scientists, promote scientific thinking: evidence-based approaches, the values of science, science as a public good Build the new generation of scientists in an inclusive way: 20% of academics in Africa are women South Africa: 40% but concentrated at low- and mid-rank positions
