3 St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Executive Director receives NYS Hometown Alumni Award By ICT Editorial Team Indian Country Today E-weekly 0ewsletter October Ë1, ÊÈ18 Page Ë Tsiorasa Barreiro receives the Cornell New York Hometown Alumni Award on October 27, (Photo courtesy of Cornell University Media Relations Office) Barreiro s many connections demonstrated how the tribe s full circle concept aligns with the qualities the award celebrates: that students bring their educational experiences, skills and abilities with them as they return home to benefit their communities. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe operates community programs in education, health services, the environment, economic development and human services. All division directors report to Barreiro. The tribe has about 15,000 members, nearly 10,000 of whom live within the 21-square-mile territory that sits on the border of Canada and the United States along the St. Lawrence River. Dozens of Akwesasne students have attended Cornell over the decades. Barreiro, who earned his bachelor s degree in communication from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, minored in Native American studies and was president of Native American Students at Cornell. After graduation, Barreiro worked for Cornell s American Indian Program and served as the residence hall director of Akwe:kon on North Campus. He became vice president of the fifth-largest Native American-owned company in the U.S., Ongweoweh Corp. in Ithaca, before moving north to Akwesasne about five years ago. Joel Malina, Cornell vice president for university relations, noted at the ceremony that Barreiro told him Cornell exposed him to new ideas and cultivated a simultaneous appreciation for the immensity and interconnectedness of our world. To read more about Barreiro, click here News Release Cornell University Media Relations Office Tsiorasa Barreiro recognized for his leadership with the Cornell New York Hometown Alumni Award ITHACA, N.Y. Tsiorasa Barreiro, an Akwesasne native and executive director for tribal operations of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe in Akwesasne, Franklin County, was recognized as a community leader and presented with the Cornell New York State Hometown Alumni Award Oct. 27. The ceremony drew on historical connections between Cornell University and Native Americans in New York state as Barreiro s extended family community gathered together.

5 Beyond high fives and selfies Indian youth explore policy issues By Jourdan Bennett-Begaye Indian Country Today E-weekly 0ewsletter October Ë1, ÊÈ18 Page 5 NCAI s youth leaders dig into the background of Indian child welfare law The youth commission of the National Congress of American Indians wraps up its final meeting and the former co-president Brian Barlow, Cherokee, hustles to the door before everyone exits. I want to give them a high five! said the 24-yearold. It s not only been an emotional day, but week as he has to turn over his leadership position to the next co-presidents. New and former NCAI youth commissioners at the 75th annual NCAI Convention on Friday, October 26, (Photo by Jourdan Bennett-Begaye) Mikah and I have been here since last Friday, he said of him and his co-president Mikah Carlos, Salt River Pima Maricopa. They immediately went to Starbucks and started working. It s been non-stop since. It has been non-stop during their two-year term as co-presidents. During the week, the youth had their own conference sessions and agenda aside. Sessions included Google talking about Google glasses and thinking outside the box, Kiowa artist Steven Paul Judd showed about his work in pop culture with a Native twist, Indian Child Welfare Act, spearheading the health walk, importance of the Native Vote and more. They also had some time to sit in on the convention sessions. NCAI even challenged them to take as many selfies with as many tribal leaders as they could. Alyssa Granado, Kiowa, blew everyone away with 40 selfies. (That networking trick worked!) But out of all the issues discussed, the number one issue that hit the entire group this week: the Indian Child Welfare Act. Former co-president Brian Barlow gives high fives as youth leave the 75th annual NCAI Convention on Thursday, October 25, (Photo by Jourdan Bennett- Begaye The Indian Child Welfare Act, or ICWA, was passed in This law requires governments, including tribal courts, act to protect the best interests of Indian children and to promote the stability and security of Indian tribes and families. A district court in Texas recently declared the act unconstitutional. So Carlos knew her and the other youth commissioners wanted to include the important topic on their agenda.
