DFID (UK), Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Govt. of the Netherlands, and NORAD, Govt. of Norway Study of Unintended Pregnancy and Abortion Incidence in Nepal This project will estimate the abortion incidence in Nepal, through the administration of two surveys, and using indirect estimation techniques on the data collected from these surveys. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Measuring and Explaining Unintended Pregnancy in the United States This project will compute and analyze the contraceptive failure rates of all contraceptive methods used in the United States. Co- Consortium for Unsafe Abortion in Africa: DFID, Govt. of the United Kingdom, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Govt. of the Netherlands Ghana: KAP Survey of Health Providers Relating to the Provision of CAC in Ghana The aim of this project is to assess the role of policy interventions for improving comprehensive abortion care services. The project requires a survey of health care providers in Ghana and examines their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in the area of comprehensive abortion care (CAC). By comparing providers in different parts of the country, and to assess if there has been any change in the KAP of physicians who were exposed to the policy interventions Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the Netherlands, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA, Govt. of Sweden), and the Packard Foundation Uganda: Economic and Social Costs of Unsafe Abortion This project aims to do a survey of post-abortion patients in Uganda. This will help us understand how unsafe abortion affects individual and household economic well-being; what unsafe abortion costs the Ugandan government; and the costs and benefits of increasing contraceptive services in bringing down unsafe abortion. 01/ / / /2013 Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the Netherlands 07/ /2012 Ghana: Unequal Access to Safe Abortion This project aims to examine social disparities in access to safe abortion in Ghana. In particular examines the conditions under which different social groups of Ghanaian women decide to have an abortion, and the decision making process which leads them to choose safe-abortion versus traditional and unsafe methods of abortion. In addition the project examines the health consequences of choosing unsafe abortion. The World Bank Adding It Up: Uganda, Ethiopia, and Burkina Faso 12/ /2011 This project aims to build the evidence base demonstrating the broad benefits of investments in sexual and reproductive health services in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Burkina Faso. The project assesses the dollar costs and benefits of providing contraceptive and sexual and reproductive health services. Previous Positions Research Analyst. American Institutes for Research. 3 Client: Marilyn Seastrom, Chief Statistician, Office of the Deputy Commissioner Statistical Standards Program Coinvestigator Manager Reviewer Survey on school principals Exploratory project to develop a new NCES survey on school principals. Responsibilities included developing a sampling frame for the survey and conducting a literature review to justify the need for this survey. Performance assessment rating tool Project required the development of an Access database for tracking non Department of Education use of all NCES datasets and data products to meet the Office of Management and Budget s (OMB) requirement for a Performance Assessment Rating Tool (PART). High school gender gap in math and science Project examined the high school gender gap in math and science performance National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS) dataset. The research question was examined using change-over-time fixed and random-effects models. The final draft of this paper was submitted to the government. Non-response bias analysis at NCES Project monitored the non-response bias analysis efforts at NCES in order to develop a meta-dataset with data on response rates, the methods used in the bias analysis, and the results of the bias analysis. The results of this project were presented at the Joint Statistical Meeting of the American Statistical Association and at a seminar of the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology, and final draft was submitted to the government. How well do school lunch data measure poverty? Project examined whether survey data obtained on use of the school lunch program are a good indicator of poverty in the nation. The research question required statistical analyses of various NCES datasets such as CCD, NELS, ELS, NHES, and NAEP. The results of this project were presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association and the final draft of the paper was submitted to the government. Technical review Project required examining NCES reports and publications for accuracy of statistical techniques, and consistency with NCES established statistical standards on a range of statistical and survey issues such as response rates and survey design. Administrative Assisted with the management of the Statistical Standards Project. Project was worth over a million dollars. Responsibilities included assisting with budgets, hiring, training, and supervising staff. Department of Sociology, University of Maryland, College Park 08/ /2005 Completed doctoral dissertation on the life course and marriage timing in Indonesia. This research analyzed the first and second waves of the Indonesian Family Life Survey data (IFLS) and the 1991 Indonesian Census Data using logistic regressions and hierarchical linear models (HLM). Completed M.A. thesis on the gender differences in literacy in India. A paper based on this thesis has been published in World Development. This paper analyzed the 1991 Indian Census District Data and used spatial auto-correlation techniques.
