2 FP2020: Nigeria commitment at the London Summit Achieving the goal of CPR of 36% by 2018 $3,000,000 annually for procurement of commodities Additional $8.35 million annually over the next four years for FP/RH A total of $33,000,000 over next four years

3 FP2020: Nigeria commitment at the London Summit Work with states and LGAs to secure complementary budgets for family planning service delivery Training health workers to improve the utilization of long acting methods (IUDs and injectables) Collaboration with private sector to make commodities affordable (efficient regulations & logistics systems) Meeting unmet need for family planning commodities

4 Highlights of activities of AFP1 that will continue in AFP2 AFP2 targeted states are FCT, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe Partners: HPP/USAID, AFP, NURHI, FHI360, UNFPA, WRA

5 Highlights of activities Advocacy to state and local governments to secure funding for family planning commodities distribution Advocacy to state governments to adopt and implement enabling policy for task-shifting for CHEWS to deliver injectables and increase use of long-acting methods Promoting public pronouncements in support of family planning by policy makers, traditional and religious leaders

6 Highlights of activities Increase capacity of our State Working Groups on family planning commodity monitoring and budget tracking and accountability Facilitate state level use of evidence-based advocacy tools: Spit Fire /Smart Chart & RAPID to identify, prioritize and deliver advocacy Asks/messages to policy makers and religious leaders Promote achievement of FP2020 objectives/ Nigeria commitments

7 List of 2013 advocacy priorities national and sub-national level State level adoption of new task-shifting policy that will allow CHEWs to provide contraceptives Advocate for family planning services as core benefit in health insurance, especially CBHIS Strengthen political and financial support for expanding access to family planning commodities and services through integrated rural health Increase information generation and use and decrease cultural and policy barriers on family planning, especially among policy makers and religious leaders

8 List of 2013 advocacy priorities national and sub-national level Increase policy makers commitment and support for greater access and right to family planning Advocate for inclusion of emergency contraceptives in essential drugs list, procured and distributed regularly in the public sector Promote the achievement of FP2020 goals in Nigeria Sustain advocacy for a National Health Bill (NHB)

9 Breaking News National Policy: The National Population Commission (NPopC) is planning for a new population policy for Nigeria. A retreat is organized by HPP/USAID for 15 th April 2013 to plan for review of NPPSD2004. The President of Nigeria will open the retreat; this will provide an opportunity to push family planning agenda Commodity Security: A fivefold increase in requests from Local Government Areas was observed in 2012, and a threefold increase in contraceptives was distributed to states in 2012.

10 Breaking News Contraceptives uptake: Nigeria saw an increase in CPR which rose from 9.7% (NDHS2008) to 14% (MICS2011) The Ministry of Health observed a decrease in stockouts, which fell from 44% in 2011 to 27% in 2012 New NDHS2013: National Population Commission has commenced activities for new NDHS2013; data may be out in July 2013
