2 2013 Homeless Count and Subpopulation Survey Responses obtained from nearly 900 (896) unaccompanied women living on the streets Counties: Riverside San Bernardino Ventura

4 The 2013 Homeless Count and subpopulation survey Survey questions were asked immediately after the person was counted The questions asked fulfilled the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) s requirement to identify certain homeless subpopulations

5 HUD s Subpopulations: Chronically homeless individuals; Chronically homeless families; Persons with children; Persons with chronic health conditions; Persons with developmental disabilities; Persons with drug or alcohol problems; Persons with HIV/AIDS; Persons with mental health problems; Persons with physical disabilities; Veterans; Victims of Domestic Violence; Unaccompanied youth under age 18; and Youth ages 18 to 24.

6 Other questions not required by HUD but that were determined by the jurisdictions included: Persons who were released from a correctional institution such as a jail or prison after serving a court-ordered sentence during the past 12 months; Persons age 25 49; Persons age 50+; and Seniors age 62+.

7 The findings of this preliminary analysis are grouped under two notable trends observed for gender and age, namely: 1. Prevalence of certain physical and social issues that increased with age 2. Prevalence of certain physical and social issues that decreased with age

8 Prevalence of physical and social issues that increased with age: Physical Disability 26.9% of women 35.9% of women ages % of women age 50 or older

9 Prevalence of physical and social issues that increased with age Chronic Health Conditions 26.9% of women ages % of women ages % of women age 50 or older

10 Prevalence of physical and social issues that increased with age Chronic Homelessness 36.6% of women ages % of women ages of women age 50 or older

11 Prevalence of physical and social issues that increased with age Mental Health Problems 21.1% women ages % women ages % women age 50 or older

12 Prevalence of physical and social issues that increased with age Domestic Violence (ever being a victim) 32.4 % of women ages % of women ages % of women age 50 or older

13 Prevalence of physical and social issues that decreased with age Substance Abuse 65.4% of women ages % of women ages % of women age 50 of older

14 Prevalence of physical and social issues that decreased with age Release from Correctional Institutions (last 12 months prior to survey) 25.4% of women ages % of women ages % of women age 50 or older

15 Prevalence of physical and social issues that decreased with age Women with Children 34.6% of women % of women ages % of women age 50 or older

16 Recommendation #1: Increase the number of affordable permanent supportive housing units for women, with a renewed emphasis on housing those age 50 and older Recommendation #2: Ensure affordable and accessible health care especially for women, particularly those age 50 or older, living in permanent supportive housing with permanent disabling conditions have affordable health care to help prevent return to homelessness Recommendation #3: Ensure that women have access to substance abuse treatment, with an emphasis on screening particularly those under age 50

17 Next Steps: A 2015 homeless count and survey will be completed for each of the same three counties at the end of January. Nearly 1,000 community volunteers and staff from public and private organization will ensure that the count and survey are completed.

18 Next Steps Cont d: A more comprehensive analysis will be completed that will further focus on the housing and social service needs of unaccompanied women living on the streets between the ages of:

19 Next Steps Cont d: The analysis will include subgroups for each of the age brackets such as, Ethnicity Chronic health conditions Physical Disability Developmental Disability HIV/AIDS Mental Illness Substance abuse

20 Subgroups will also include: Women living on the streets discharged from a correctional institution in the last 12 months prior to the count and survey Veterans Victims of Domestic Violence Women with children

21 1. The findings will be provided in a report and made available to stakeholders and in particular, policy makers. 2. Recommendations will encourage such persons to convene to help rectify local deficiencies in research and policy Our goal: To help create opportunities to promote best ideas and next practices to end homelessness among unaccompanied women (and women with children living on the streets)
