1 1 st Pan-African Yuth SUMMIT - Yuth#EndFGM2018 YOUNG PEOPLE ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE END FGM MOVEMENT th April 2018, Nairbi The Girl Generatin is pleased t annunce the first ever Pan-African Yuth #EndFGM 2018 Summit, a tw day event t be held in Nairbi in April The Yuth#EndFGM Summit will bring tgether yung peple frm acrss the cntinent placing them at the centre f the mvement t end FGM, and catalysing their cllective actin, reach and influence. The #EndFGM summit will be an pprtunity t celebrate the change that is already taking place, share tgether what has wrked and what hasn t, and t shw the wrld that African yung peple are seriusly cmmitted t ending FGM. They will make their call t actin t yung peple acrss the cntinent, and deliver their demands t African leaders abut the future they want t be part f. Backgrund Female genital mutilatin (FGM) is a glbal issue affecting 200 millin wmen and girls wrldwide. It is ne f the mst severe human rights vilatins and is increasingly receiving internatinal attentin. We believe that mre needs t be dne t ensure FGM ends in a generatin, by cntinuusly building awareness f the issue, prfiling FGM as a glbal prblem that is directly related t many ther girls rights issues and, imprtantly, engaging mre peple in the issue, sparking cnversatins and debate, and prmpting individuals t take actin within their wn cntexts. Yung peple are inspiratin and fuel fr The Girl Generatin. They are critical t ending FGM in their generatin, as culture shapers, plicy influencers and future parents. African yuth are mre cnnected and engaged than ever, with scial media prviding access t new infrmatin, new ways f cmmunicating with ne anther, and prviding a windw n a wrld previusly beynd their reach. They are pen t new ideas, influenced by cultural figures frm arund the wrld, and ready t give their allegiance and passin t issues they see as imprtant. This is an inquisitive, cnfident, vibrant generatin; it is full f energy, ptential and aspiratin; and it leads the way in speaking ut fr change and pprtunity.

2 The Africa Ecnmic Outlk s 2015 reprt indicates that 40% f the cntinent s wrking age ppulatin is between the ages f 15 and 24. Hw they think and what they see as imprtant are crucial insights t shaping private sectr and develpment pririties in shaping Africa s future. Further data shws that Africa has the yungest and fastest- grwing ppulatin in the wrld, and it cntinues t get yunger as ppulatins arund the wrld get lder. There are almst 200 millin yuth in Africa and that number will duble by With this in mind, 2017 has been marked as The Year f Yuth by the Africa Unin - Harnessing the Demgraphic Dividend thrugh investments in Yuth. They recgnize that Investments made tday in the yuth, wh represent Africa s greatest asset, will determine the develpment trajectry f Africa ver the next 50 years and psitin the cntinent twards realizing the Africa We Want, as a strng, united and influential glbal player and partner. Success in achieving ur gal t see an end t FGM in a generatin will nly be pssible with yung peple at the helm and there is already, a visible demnstratin f yung peple s cmmitment t ending FGM acrss the cntinent. Since 2016, The Girl Generatin has supprted the launch f three Anti-FGM yuth netwrks in Nigeria, Kenya and The Gambia and wrked clsely with a similar netwrk in Sudan. These netwrks are fr yuth, by yuth, setting their wn agenda and designing their wn apprach t reach ther yuth in their spheres f influence. They are creative, cnfident and assertive using the tls at their fingertips t generate discussin amngst their peers. They have als achieved the attentin f their leaders and decisinmakers. Yung peple reprt feeling that they are invlved spradically and ften superficially as architects, shapers, r prducers f systems that are built n their behalf. It is time that this changed. The Pan African Yuth #EndFGM2018 summit is a tw day event that will be held in April 2018, in Nairbi Kenya. Wh are the hsts? The summit will be hsted by The Girl Generatin and the Yuth Anti-FGM netwrk in Africa. Wh will attend? Five yung peple frm each f The Girl Generatin s ten fcal cuntries and frm the UK and US diaspra will take part in the summit, alngside specifically selected ambassadrs, leading activists and media experts. 2

3 Aims and Outputs This will be an innvative, yuth-led summit which centres n actin and learning, and equips participants t return t their cuntries inspired and ready t mbilise their peers in the mvement t EndFGM. 4 Prpsed tpic ideas The summit will be rganized arund fur tracks, with a fcus n mutual learning, building slidarity and taking cllective actin as a pan-african yuth netwrk. Belw we utline these tracks with sme examples f what they culd invlve, with detailed agenda planning currently underway. Many yuth participants will be highly experienced campaigners with much t ffer at the summit, s the fcus will be n yuth-led sessins. Participants will als be asked t prepare cntributins in advance f the summit, s that the fcus f the tw adys is n sharing experiences, develping messages and calls t actin and identifying pririties fr actin. This track will fcus n: Sharing leadership tips fr new and emerging end FGM leaders Explre pprtunities fr peer learning and supprt Develping a yuth mentrship agenda t strengthen leadership fr ending FGM Principles fr planning and preparatin These principles will guide planning and actin fr Yuth#EndFGM2018 Yuth-led: t many cntexts are framed as yuth-led, but end up with the same requirements t engage lng lists f dignitaries, t the pint that yung peple end up taking a back seat and are talked at rather than shaping and speaking with ne anther. This summit will be radically different with yung peple frm the Anti-FGM Yuth Netwrks at the heart f planning and leading the event. We will: Use scial media and crwd-surcing platfrms t plan the festival frm agenda t actins Nt allw lng speeches frm dignitaries, ther than thse requested and briefed by yuth peple themselves. Limit nn-yuth attendance t thse with a very specific rle ie. Leading a breakut sessin r invited by yuth t engage n plicy r ther tpics f discussin. 6 Actin, nt a talk/ listening shp: in bringing large grups f peple tgether frm acrss the cntinent, actin and cllabrative decisin making will be priritised t make sure that the summit has a clear utput and gal, rather than a lng list f inputs, speeches and panels. We will: Determine, in advance, clear utputs frm the summit chsen and led by the yuth participants. Fcus n inputs which train and equip yuth in their wrk, and are defined by their wn needs and pririties such as cmmunicatins training, campaign planning, advcacy and lbbying preparatin. Priritise learning and sharing successes Rather than talking abut ding we will priritise what can be dne immediately whilst tgether at the summit Avid lng dcuments (!) and written reprts instead we will use innvative apps and platfrms t share take uts and live reprting. Virtual cnnectins beynd the rm: whilst aiming t bring tgether a wide selectin f yuth frm acrss the African cntinent, the reality is that numbers will be limited due t budget and manageable numbers attending. We will aim t pen up the summit t a wider audience thrugh live streaming n scial media and interactive sessins with direct engagement frm nline audiences. We will: Livestream the event Develp sessins with interactive questin times and debate Create time fr cllective scial media actin frm the event (ie. Facebk live etc), Hackathns Develp daily digests and updates t send ut t virtual attendees Develp specific digital utputs frm the summit fr wider engagement Increasing visibility and amplificatin at the heart: In bringing tgether leading yuth activists frm different cuntries, the level f experience and passin in the rm will be high. The summit prvides an excellent pprtunity t increase visibility f yuth actin bth in terms f immediate cmmunicatin frm the event, but als t gather stries and develp interesting cntent t take frward int ther areas f TGG s wrk, as well as t prmte the Yuth Netwrks themselves. We will: Plan and carry ut the summit frm the perspective f an external audience hw can this be shared? Hw can this prvide cntent? E.g. surcing and filming stries. Wh culd listen t this right away? Prvide multiple pprtunities fr attendees t shw case stries, with stries filmed and images taken. Build partnerships and wrk with what already exists: rather than starting frm scratch, the summit will aim t wrk with what already exists psitining the mvement t End FGM firmly within the brader issue f Ending Vilence Against Wmen and Girls.
