7 HOUSEHOLD WATER TREATMENT & SAFE STORAGE PROGRAM PUR water purification program introduced in March, 2010 Over 2,000 households have been supplied with PUR materials Materials provided: Two buckets Stirring stick Two filtering cloths Instructional guide Unlimited PUR sachets
8 HWTS EDUCATION AT AMS Education about HWTS as a critical part of nutrition and medication regimens PUR group demonstrations Individual PUR consultation and instruction Ongoing support and provision of PUR water purification sachets

10 AMS HWTS STATISTICS 79 percent of patients practicing HWTS 26 percent use PUR for HWTS 100 percent of food program participants surveyed do HWTS 70 percent decrease in cases of diarrhoea among patients who have begun practicing HWTS

12 STORY FROM THE FIELD: BASHIR An AMS HWTS Program Success Story
13 BASHIR THEN Came to AMS in July, 2009 Weighed 28 kilos Extremely dehydrated and malnourished Suffered from chronic diarrhoea caused by cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis, water-borne diseases Received treatment and education about HWTS
14 BASHIR ONE YEAR LATER Free from diarrhoeal disease Had overcome TB, cancer, liver and kidney failure Able to start his own motorbike repair business
15 BASHIR TODAY Family remains free of water-borne disease
16 FACING THE CHALLENGES OF HWTS Inadequate education Lack of resources Program assessment Dependence Offer frequent, varied educational programs Provide water purification materials free-of-charge Conduct regular assessments consisting of questionnaires, interviews and home visits Counsel and encourage independence and record increase in patients ability to participate in education attainment and incomegenerating activities
17 FUTURE OF HWTS AT AMS Improve and expand our HWTS program until all 7,000+ patients have access to safe drinking water Provide patient households with a safe storage and serving container Offer community education about HWTS

19 CONCLUSION Safe water is key to saving 3 million lives per year worldwide Cost of providing safe water supplies is a fraction of what it costs to care for a patient suffering from chronic water-borne illness Safe water supply costs are far less than the amount in human capital lost due to waterborne illness
