1 Grampians Region Allied Health Workforce Newsletter 16 h Edition May 2016 Introduction Welcome to the 16 th edition of the Grampians Region Allied Health Workforce Newsletter. There is a lot happening at the moment in both the allied health space and also with the restructure of the now Department of Health and Human Services. Please stay tuned for further information on the restructure of the Department of Health and Human Services (including the name change to reflect the new restructure in the next edition). In relation to allied health, we ran our highly successful Barwon South Western and Grampians Region Allied Health Conference 2016, at Federation University, Horsham. Further information is available on the conference later in this newsletter. The newsletter also includes information on the Physiotherapy Bachelor course which commences at Australian Catholic University, Ballarat campus, in There are also several interprofessional development opportunities for allied health in the Grampians Region. A key priority in the Grampians Region Allied Health Interprofessional Development Strategy (201 17) was having a central point (e.g. webpage and / or newsletter) to provide the allied health workforce with this information. 2 What is happening in allied health in the Grampians Region Barwon South Western and Grampians Allied Health Conference The Barwon South Western and Grampians Allied Health Conference was held at Federation University in Horsham, Victoria on Thursday, April 21, The theme of the conference was Facing the future: Innovation and collaboration in regional allied health. The second keynote speaker for the conference was Kathleen Philip, the Victorian Chief Allied Health Advisor. The title of her presentation was The Changing Health and Human Services Landscape in Victoria and some key priorities for allied health. There were 90 delegates who attended the conference and they were from a variety of allied health backgrounds. The conference featured 3 keynote speakers, 2 allied health professionals and allied health assistants who presented their research and quality improvement projects and 3 poster presentations. For further information on all of the presentation abstracts and biographies please refer to the webpage at: Keynote speakers The first of the keynote speakers was Professor Susan Nancarrow, Southern Cross University. The title of her presentation was Negotiating the politics of research: Understanding the system to make your research count. 3 Concurrent session and poster presentations The oral presentations in the concurrent sessions were of a very high standard and the conference provided a platform to showcase some of the great projects occurring across both regions. There was a great variety of presentations from across different settings (acute, community, health promotion), organisations and regions. There was also a good mix of presenters across different allied health backgrounds. The prize for best first time presenter went to Andrew Rank (Colac Area Health) who presented in partnership with Natalie Selenitsch (Barwon Health). The topic of their presentation was Improving the outcome of a young stroke patient using tele-health. The prize for best overall presenter was awarded to Heidi Manson (South West Healthcare). The topic of her presentation was A new grade 3 allied health assistant role in diabetes and chronic disease management. An award was also given to Jessica Green and Ruth Alger for best poster presentation for the poster Occupational Therapy Scooter Assessment and Training. Information on all presentations (including the conference program) is located on the webpage at: Conference evaluation An evaluation survey was distributed to conference delegates on the day of the conference. The collated feedback from surveys was very positive and also provided constructed feedback for improvements.. This information was presented to the conference planning committee and will be used to plan future regional allied health conferences Barwon South Western and Grampians Allied Health Conference Planning Committee A big thank you to the Barwon South Western and Grampians Allied Health Conference Planning Committee for all of the work they did in planning the conference and delivering it on the day.. This module was developed to be highly interactive and includes learning activities and content. The sections in this module include: What is evidence-based practice? Why use evidence-based practice? Defining your evidence-based practice question Understanding the hierarchy of evidence Course summary and where to from here The follow up module evidence-based practice basic principles part 2 is in the final stages of being developed and should be released on all of the same e- learning platforms by August / September The sections in this module will include: Searching for evidence Assessing the quality of literature Clinical guidelines Implementing your findings, and Reassessing your practice Shari Maver, Senior Physiotherapist, Barwon Health Grampians Regional Allied Health Workforce Development Newsletter 16 h Edition 3

Scoping project of pharmacy workforce and services in the Grampians Region The Grampians Regional Office of the Department of Health and Human Services is undertaking a project to scope pharmacy services and workforce in the Grampians Region. The aims of this project are to better understand how pharmacy services and workforce operate in the Grampians Region and to use information provided in the survey to identify opportunities for improvement. A survey was developed in consultation with the pharmacy sector in the Grampians region and distributed to relevant contacts in each organisation. The data from surveys is currently being collated and will be developed into a summary report. Further information on this project will be provided in future newsletters. Physiotherapy Bachelor Program to commence at Australian Catholic University Ballarat Campus in 2017 Dr Suzanne Kuys from the Australian Catholic University (ACU) was a keynote speaker at the Barwon South Western and Grampians Allied Health Conference Suzanne has been appointed by ACU to plan for the implementation of the Physiotherapy Bachelor course at the Ballarat campus of ACU. The physiotherapy program is a Bachelor program over years and the initial intake of students is expected to be between 0 50 students. The course will have a strong focus on supporting Western Victoria through building positive relationships with regional health organisations and supporting enrolments in the course from local students. Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) Conference 2016 Theme: It takes a village to raise a child When: October 2016 Where: Port Lincoln, South Australia Further information: For further information on the conference and to register please visit the website at: Review of the Family Violence Risk Assessment and Risk Management Framework in Victoria Invitation to participate The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has appointed Monash University to conduct a review of the Family Violence Common Risk Assessment Framework (CRAF) as part of the DHHS response to the Victoria Royal Commission into Family Violence. The project is an important part of the staged response to recommendations of the Royal Commission. As valued partners in addressing and eliminating family violence, you are encouraged to participate in the project and ensure your views, insights and experiences are heard. The partnership project aims to undertake an in-depth review of the CRAF and examine how effective this framework is for users, including family violence survivors, police, health providers and other key stakeholders. This is a project which has been funded by the department and Susan is the lead researcher of this project with Southern Cross University.
