Does Your Pet Have... Bad Breath? Discoloured or Broken Teeth? Difficulty Chewing or Eating? If so, they may be experiencing the side effects of dental disease. 2

What is Dental Disease? Periodontal (Dental) Disease is caused by the body s inflammatory reaction to bacteria which accumulate on the teeth and beneath the gums. Stages of gum disease diagram courtesy of My Dental Care Guide www.mydentalcareguide.com 3

What does this mean for your pet? Local Effects On Your Pet s Mouth: Systemic Effects on Your Pet s Body: If left untreated, Dental Disease, can lead to problems such as: Long term disease can also damage major organs such as the: - 4 Tooth root abscesses Jaw fractures & Increased risk of oral cancer - Heart Kidneys & Liver This increases your pet s risk of developing diabetes, cardiac disease, and renal failure.

1 My Pet Needs A Dental Cleaning What should I do now? What is the next step? 5

Schedule an Office Visit for Your Pet 6 This is the perfect time for the veterinarian to perform a full body examination on your pet and test the blood to make sure that their internal organs are functioning at healthy levels.

$ But Why Is All This Necessary? Having more information makes the dental process safer for your pet. By doing a thorough physical exam and testing the blood we can ensure the best results during anesthesia and the quickest recovery after the procedure. 7

2 It Is Time For My Pet s Dental Cleaning What should I expect? 8

What Happens When You Drop Off Your Pet... A technician will weigh your pet, listen to their heart, count the beats, watch their breathing, and check their temperature. Once the technician has made sure that your pet s vital signs are normal they put in an intravenous catheter. 9 Venous access port.

We use the catheter to give IV fluids during the dental procedure, which keeps your pet well-hydrated and promotes healthy blood pressure during anesthesia. 10

What Happens Next? With the health check complete and the catheter finished it is time to give pre-procedure medications and get the dental equipment set up. 11

What is the purpose of pre-medicating? For best results during anesthesia, we administer several medications including an antibiotic, pain relief injection, and anticholinergic (cardiac agent) to keep the heart rate at optimum levels under anesthesia. 12

What We Use During A Dental Cleaning We use a special blanket that can sense your pet s body pressure to keep them nice and warm, towels to absorb any excess water and cushion your pet s head, and an assortment of specialized dental tools. 13

Our Dental Tools 14

3 Performing the Actual Dental Cleaning How is it done? What is involved? 15

How We Go About Doing A Dental Cleaning... First, we anesthetize our patient. Once they are under anesthesia one technician monitors their heart rate, respirations, blood pressure, oxygenation, and temperature while the other takes x-rays of your pet s teeth. 16

$ Why Do We Need X-rays? By performing full mouth radiographs, we can spot broken teeth, infected roots, retained baby teeth and other problems that can cause your pet a lot of pain if left untreated. 17

Let s Clean Up Those Teeth 18 First Second Third The technician cleans off the plaque and calculus with an ultrasonic scaler. They check the spaces around the tooth for pocketing, a sign of significant dental disease. The technician polishes the teeth with a special paste to remove any microscopic grooves made by the scaler.

What Do We Do Once the Teeth Are Clean? With the cleaning completed we can extract any broken or damaged teeth, fill the pockets to prevent further disease, and finally apply a gel sealant to help the cleaning last longer. 19

Before the Dental Cleaning After 20

All Done Now you can enjoy the bright smiles and clean breath! 21
