Misquamicut Beach Race, Rhode Island. May 18, 2013. On April 15, 2013, Patriots Day in Massachusetts, the annual Boston Marathon started without incident. However, at 2:49 p.m., two pressure cooker bombs were detonated on Boylston Street, just short of the finish line. Police, rescue workers, and medical personnel, who were on hand to assist the runners and bystanders, rushed to the aid of wounded victims. Three spectators were killed and 264 were injured. At least 14 people required amputations. Following this tragic event and many days of investigation, the phrase Boston Strong was heard throughout Massachusetts and around the country. Mark Dearborn, Vice President of Corporate Accounts, felt the need to do something beyond the normal fundraising within the Arpin organization. He solicited others to join him and began an ongoing campaign and series of events to raise donations, not only for the victims of the marathon bombings, but also of other such tragedies, disasters, and worthy causes. Starting with the BoldRDash race on May 18, 2013, funds were raised for both the One Fund Boston to provide assistance to the marathon bombing victims and restoration efforts following the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy. The Arpin Charitable Fund, Inc. d/b/a Arpin Strong was born. Arpin Strong is now a registered 501(c)(3) corporation with the IRS, totally separate from any of the Arpin Group companies, with its own Board of Directors and bylaws. Mark Dearborn is the President of the corporation and serves with the other members of the Board of Directors: Brian Asay, Vice President Mike Killoran, Treasurer Christina Sarza, Secretary Kathy Frazier, Director of Communications & Marketing Over the past eight months, Arpin Strong has conducted theme days, monthly raffles, and supported the efforts of Arpin s Race Team to raise funds. In addition, an Arpin Family Day took place over the summer for the entire Arpin corporate team and monies were raised through several raffles that took place during the event. The events also had another very positive effect bringing the employees of Arpin Group, Arpin Van Lines, and Arpin International Group closer together. A key component of the success of any organization is the people willing to give of their own time and efforts towards a common cause. Many members of the Arpin corporate team have stepped forward to participate in fundraising efforts, as well as charitable events to help those in need. One such example was when Bob Sullivan, Sr. VP, Commercial, was inspired by his daughter Michaela s battle with severe scoliosis and Ehlers Danlos syndrome (EDS). He launched a personal mission to lose weight, while raising monies in the process. Over $20,000 (through his weight loss efforts and miscellaneous donations) was raised for several charitable causes. In addition, employees have participated, on their own time, in the collection of supplies for those affected by the Oklahoma tornados and, in the Philippines, by typhoon Haiyan. Moreover, as in years past, Arpin s employees have adopted families for the Holidays, providing presents and gift cards.
