Headache Relief (4 slides)
Something all headaches have in common New study published in the latest issue of the medical journal Headache analyzed different types of migraine triggers (stress, noise, medications, perfume, alcohol, etc) to see if there was anything these triggers had in common Answer: oxidative stress All migraine triggers generate oxidative stress, which in turn leads to inflammation, toxicity, tissue damage and other adverse effects A separate study in the same issue of Headache reports that certain antioxidant levels are up to 50% lower in people who experience migraines then in healthy controls Significantly reduced antioxidant levels have also been found in people who suffer from chronic tension headaches
Stop oxidative stress to stop headaches Curcumin is an extremely powerful antioxidant capable of effectively neutralizing a range of free radicals In a comparison test, curcumin was more effective at preventing free radical formation than BHA, vitamin C, and Vitamin E Curcumin s ORAC value is over 1,500,000 Comparison: Blueberries ORAC = 4669 Curcumin also protects other antioxidants Cell study glutathione (the body s master antioxidant) was exposed to a known toxin alone or in combination with curcumin glutathione levels declined 68% when it was alone, but combining glutathione with curcumin COMPLETELY PREVENTED any reduction
Stop inflammation to stop headaches In a study of patients with asthma taking a leukotriene inhibitor (asthma is linked to inflammation caused by leukotrienes), researchers made an accidental discovery The patients in the study reported that they didn t get migraine headaches as often while they took the drug that inhibited leukotrienes Boswellia is a powerful inhibitor of leukotrienes and the 5-LOX inflammation pathway Shown in a small clinical study to reduce the intensity and frequency of cluster headaches
Other nutrients helpful in migraine prevention Magnesium 41% reduction in migraine frequency after 600 mg of magnesium daily (12 week study) Magnesium versus a steroid drug/anti-nausea combination in 70 patients with acute migraine headache pain reduction was about 50% better in the magnesium group than in the drug group Migraines have been linked to high homocysteine levels Patients had 6 months of daily supplementation with folic acid, B6 and B12 Homocysteine levels dropped almost 40% and migraine frequency was half the baseline value after 6 months DLPA Helps reduce the intensity of pain signals and increases mood-elevating substances in the brain
Exercise Keeps the Mind Sharp (1 slide)
Exercise Sharpens the Mind 10 year study of more than 150 pairs of twin sisters, ages 43-73 at the beginning of the study Researchers determined leg power using a modified piece of gym equipment that measured speed and power of leg extension; they also measured memory and mental processing skills Results: the twins who had more leg power at the start of the study sustained mental function and had fewer brain changes associated with aging 10 years later Researchers also looked at other factors, such as heart health, but leg strength was the best predictor of future brain function Why? Exercise reduces inflammation and strengthens the immune system, and new research finds it may even encourage growth of new brain cells!
Soy Bean Oil Worse than Fructose? (1 slide)
Soy is So Bad 95% of packaged and prepared foods use soy bean oil cheap and easy to get New study finds that diets high in soy bean oil cause more obesity than fructose 4 groups of mice had a diet containing 40% fat (similar to American diet) Group 1: fat from coconut oil Group 2: 50% coconut and 50% soybean oil Group 3: fat from coconut oil plus fructose Group 4: 50/50 coconut and soybean oil plus fructose Results: Compared to mice eating coconut oil, mice eating soy bean oil gained almost 25% more weight, had larger fat deposits, a fatty liver with signs of injury, diabetes and insulin resistance. Mice on the fructose-enriched diet plus soybean oil gained 12% more weight than those on the diet rich in coconut oil. Fructose caused kidney problems and an increase in prolapsed rectums, a symptom of inflammatory bowel disease.
Vitamin D is great for Teeth (2 slides)
Vitamin D for Cavity Prevention New study from Canada finds that vitamin D prevents cavities Researchers looked at school-aged children, and found that those with optimal levels of vitamin D had a 40% lower risk of getting cavities Vitamin D encourages the body to produce a natural protein that protects teeth Similar results were found in a review of 24 controlled clinical trials involving 3,000 kids - vitamin D intake was associated with a 50% reduction in risk of cavities
Other ways to keep teeth healthy Follow the Paleo diet AVOID ADDED SUGARS 30% animal protein 60% animal fat (Not artificial trans fat!) 10% non-starchy carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables no more than 72 grams of carbohydrates daily 50 or less on the Glycemic Index Brush your teeth but skip the fluoridated water Make sure you have enough saliva Antibacterial Contains minerals which strengthen tooth enamel Neutralizes acids Sea buckthorn can restore moisture to dry mouths Peppermint, Clove, Cinnamon, Oregano oils Reduce inflammation and kill oral yeast and harmful bacteria
