RFL Team Engagement Strategy Healthcare Benefits of RFL/Healthcare Partnership There is a natural existing partnership between the healthcare community and the American Cancer Society. Both share in the fight against cancer as well as the effort to educate the public about cancer awareness and provide patient services. During the 2008-09 Relay season, over 7% of teams in the Mid-South came from healthcare and hospitals. The Mid-South had over 1100 Healthcare related Relay teams this past year. One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The money raised at Relay helps provide a world with more birthdays by getting well, staying well, finding cures and fighting back against the disease. RFL Speaking Points ACS signature activity that began with one man, Dr. Gordy Klatt in 1985. A community gathering rather than an athletic event, anyone can participate. Relay is also a venue for interactive education and information delivery. Physicians and medical personnel have the initial opportunity to present the services of the ACS to recently diagnosed patients as well as educate the public on our mission and programs. ACS Speaking Points The ACS is the world s largest and oldest voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer. Invested more than $3.4 billion in cancer research since 1946. The largest private nonprofit source of funding for cancer research, second only to the federal government. ACS funded researchers discovered life saving screenings such as the Pap test, PSA test and mammography. ACS has funded 44 Nobel Prize winners.

Preferred Initial Contact 1. Where to Recruit Recruiting teams from the Healthcare community should be a major focus of your Team Recruitment Committee. Specific areas to focus on for Healthcare Teams: Cancer Specific: Hospitals Cancer Centers Oncology Physicians Pediatric Oncologists Dermatologists Urologists Gastroenterologists Plastic Surgeons (Cosmetic/Reconstructive) Pain Management Clinics Large Specialty Groups: Radiology Groups Cardiology Groups Neurology Groups Orthopedic Groups Anesthesiology Groups Primary Care Groups (Internal Medicine) General Surgery Groups Urology Groups Pathology Groups Others: Physical Therapists Rehab Facilities Long Term Care Facilities (staff) Single Day (Out Patient) Surgery Centers Chiropractors Dentists Ophthalmologists Allergists ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat)

2. How to Encourage Involvement Hospitals Identify physicians and other healthcare personnel who may be involved with ACS already. Ask for their help in identifying potential hospital teams and making appropriate introductions. Meet with the Human Resources Director to present Relay and help identify key contacts within the hospital. Relay is a great opportunity for team building and for employees to interact outside the work environment. Make an appointment to meet with the Marketing Director. Explain how participating with Relay benefits the hospital s public image and community involvement outside the hospital walls. Add Hospital CEO and key personnel to your Kickoff invitation list. Determine if the hospital has a Cancer Center to approach. Ask to include RFL information in the hospital s staff newsletter. Include event website and Survivor Registration information. Feature a Survivor story in newsletter or other hospital publications. Review past teams to identify any associated with the hospital. Recruit a volunteer for your Team Recruitment Committee who is associated with the hospital. Partner with local hospital and do a mailing to Survivors in your area. Ask if you can hold a Relay Day in their lobby to recruit possible teams and Survivors. Contact hospital support groups to see if a volunteer can do a presentation or send them information about Relay and Survivor participation. Ask if hospital will allow you to put up Relay posters. Ask if hospital will allow you or volunteer to make a Relay presentation with Relay video during, before or after a staff meeting. Physicians, Clinics and Healthcare Groups Visit all oncology offices and oncology/radiation facilities to educate them on the programs and services available. Ask if registration forms and brochures can be placed in their offices. Schedule a lunch and learn at the local physician offices where your volunteers can educate them on Relay and our programs and services and also present Relay.

Give the doctor s office staff Ask me about Relay stickers to wear at work each day. Visit long term care and rehabilitation facilities. Meet with the Nursing Supervisor and Medical Director. Present Relay along with our Programs and Services to the staff. Many larger group practices have enough staff to form more than one team. Each medical group will have a Practice Manager or Group CEO that should be approached initially. Call and make an appointment to present Relay. Ask if you can present to the entire staff at a lunch or staff meeting. Common specialty groups with an interest in supporting Relay are Primary Care/Internal Medicine, Radiology/Oncology, Urology, Gastroenterology, Dermatology and Pathology. 3. Additional Ways to Recruit Healthcare Teams Invite members of the medical community to serve on your committee. Invite leaders in the healthcare community to your Kickoff, Committee meetings and Team Captain meetings. Recognize Survivors in your healthcare community. Ask hospitals and large medical groups to have multiple teams and create competition. Ask your Survivor volunteers to approach their personal physicians about participating. Have Survivors start a letter writing campaign directed towards the local medical community. Contact Hospital Auxiliaries. Ask Healthcare based Team Captains to recruit other Healthcare team captains. See Team Challenger program. Contact support groups within the Healthcare community. Sample letter to Hospital Administrators Insert Date Dear insert Administrator s name, The American Cancer Society and insert hospital name are both devoted to providing patient services to cancer survivors and educating our community about cancer prevention and early detection. We have a wonderful opportunity to share our life saving programs and messages with our community and would like for insert hospital name to join us in this endeavor. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society s signature activity that is being held in over 5000 communities this year in the United States. It is also being held in 21 other countries.
