Syllabus PHARMACIST IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA COLLEGE OF PHARMACY The University of Florida is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This course is approved for 20 hours of CPE credit upon successful completion of the self study with a grade of at least 70%, demonstration of appropriate immunization techniques, and passing the CPR section of the program. Course Description The University of Florida College of Pharmacy Pharmacist Immunization Program complies with Florida Statute 465.189 and with The Florida Board of Pharmacy Rule 64B16-26.1031. Pharmacists, who are currently registered pharmacist in the State of Florida, after successful completion of this course and paying a specified fee, may apply to the Florida Board of Pharmacy for certification to administer immunizations in the State of Florida. In addition you are to complete an evaluation form. Pre-Requisites Must be a pharmacist registered in the State of Florida with a license in good standing. University of Florida Pharmacy Students are also eligible to take this course as a part of their curriculum.
Must have access to a computer with internet capabilities (preferably high speed) Must be registered for the course and have a user name and password Assessing the Course The self-study unit is located on a platform utilized by the University of Florida, e-learning. You can access the course through the Internet and study at your own pace. The website for you to use is "https://lss.at.ufl.edu/" (without the quotation marks, of course). When you get to this page you will see a Continue button. Click the button and you will see boxes to register. Enter your user name and password then click OK. You should now be at your main course page. The goal of this course is to provide pharmacists in the State of Florida with knowledge of and skills in, immunology, the epidemiology of influenza, indications for vaccination and implementation and initiation of a pharmacy-based immunization program to make immunization delivery a part of pharmacy practice. Emphasis will be on influenza but the course will cover many aspects of preventable diseases. The course consists of twelve (12) hours of self study and eight (8) hours of active participation. The self study section of the program will include, but not be limited to such subjects as basics of vaccinology, topics about influenza, legal issues, vaccine logistics, introduction to injections, management of adverse reactions, and blood-borne pathogens. The live course will be a practicum on injections and CPR training. At the conclusion of the course you will be certified to administer CPR. Each participant must complete and pass the 12-hour home study module with a score of at least 70% and demonstrate good immunization techniques in order to pass the course. Additionally each participant must pass the CPR course that is a part of the live program. The self study segment of the course covers important aspects of immunization immunology, epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccines in development, indications for vaccination, immunization protocol development, emergency procedures, marketing, vaccine storage and handling, vaccine information sources and retrieval, reimbursement and record keeping, The live course will be in workshop format to help participants learn vaccine administration techniques and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. The course will conclude with the administration of the final written examination. Who Should Participate The course is for pharmacists who are registered pharmacists in the State of Florida and who wish to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to apply to the Florida Board of Pharmacy to administer influenza immunizations in the State of Florida. 1. Relate the principles, scheduling, precautions, and contraindications for influenza vaccination. 2. Describe the epidemiology of influenza and other vaccine-preventable diseases. 3. Develop a screening technique to identify patients needing influenza immunization. 4. Demonstrate protocol development with a physician in compliance with Florida state law, including record keeping, emergency procedures, and reporting requirements. 5. Evaluate influenza vaccine information resources. 6. Discuss the various safety procedures required of a pharmacy-delivered immunization services. 7. Describe methods of compensation for immunization services. 8. Explain the storage and handling requirements of influenza vaccines. 9. Demonstrate techniques of vaccine administration for adults. 10. Demonstrate a basic understanding of blood-borne pathogens 11. Explain common modes of their transmission and methods of prevention 12. Demonstrate successful completion of CPR training Continuing Professional Education Credits This course is approved for 20 hours of CPE credit upon successful completion of the self study with a grade of at least 70%, demonstration of appropriate immunization techniques, and passing the CPR section of the program. Statements of Pharmacy Continuing Education Credit will be mailed to the address provided by the participant after completion of the Program. Course Goals 1. To help pharmacists achieve a level of comfort with patients who volunteer for influenza immunization through a greater depth of understanding of the requirements of handling and administering vaccines and the skills to handle adverse reactions if they arise. 2. To provide information about the immunizations, influenza and the influenza vaccine to patients and/or their care givers. 3. To provide an understanding of the complexities of vaccine administration. 4. To help pharmacists learn how pharmaceutical care is applied for patients who request influenza immunizations. 5. To help pharmacists feel more comfortable in educating patients, caregivers, and other health care professionals regarding safe and optimal influenza immunizations. 6. To provide knowledge and expertise to pharmacists about ordering, storing, and administering influenza vaccines and the legal requirements of the process. 7. Educate pharmacists of necessary and thorough documentation for patients receiving influenza vaccines.
8. Train pharmacists in the knowledge and skills of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) so they will be able to handle emergencies. Major Course Objective Students who successfully complete this course will achieve a level of comfort with patients requiring influenza immunization therapy through a greater depth of understanding of the patient s needs and thereby become more effective in communicating with patients. Specific Course Objectives Upon completion of this course pharmacists will be able to: 1. Relate information about the pathophysiology, etiology, and complications of reasons why patients require influenza immunizations. 2. Explain how influenza vaccines are used to prevent influenza 3. Describe the complexities of managing an influenza program in a pharmacy. 4. Effectively educate patients, caregivers, and other health-care professionals regarding safe and optimal influenza vaccinations. 5. Develop an influenza immunization service including a protocol with at least one physician. 6. Demonstrate how to manage and market an influenza immunization service. Competencies 1. Apply applicable skills to assess patients who require influenza vaccinations and to document interventions. 2. Communicate effectively with physicians regarding protocols. 3. Describe how influenza immunization prevents disease and the complications that could occur with the procedure. 4. Communicate effectively with patients, their caregivers, and other healthcare professionals about the need for influenza vaccination. 5. Use clinical, economic, or other data to design, implement, and modify an influenza service. 6. Conduct assessments of potential or real patient problems and recommend/monitor medications. 7. Promote an interdisciplinary approach to influenza service. 8. Provide patient education with a goal of appropriately affecting patient behaviors. 9. Develop an influenza immunization service and implement a marketing plan for the service. 10. Document patient-specific data in the medical record. 11. Write letters to physicians to obtain their permission and develop a protocol with them. 12. Write letters to patients. 13. Demonstrate ability to administer CPR.
14. Successfully demonstrate an ability to administer vaccinations. 15. Prepare documents to obtain payment for services Evaluation 1. The student must complete all sections of the course successfully and pass one or more assessment exams in order to receive a certificate. 2. The student must demonstrate appropriate techniques for administering vaccinations 3. The student must demonstrate effective CPR techniques. 4. The student must pass a final examination at the completion of the live part of the program. Evaluation Methods: 1. Quizzes Score at least 70% on quizzes. 2. Immunization Practicum Demonstrate correct injection techniques to the satisfaction of the instructor(s). 3. CPR Training Demonstrate skills in CPR techniques to the satisfaction of the instructor(s). Course Grade The minimum final grade required for course satisfactory completion of all assignments and a score of 70% on all quizzes. Certificate Upon completion of all requirements (Successful completion of all modules, passing quizzes with a score of at least 70%, and submitting a completed evaluation form) University of College of Pharmacy will issue a certificate of completion. The University of Florida College of Pharmacy is an accredited provider of Certificate Programs in Pharmacy. Pharmacists who complete the course will receive the certificate.
