Voice of the Vets Sidney American Legion Post 217 NEWSLETTER November December 2018 Sidney, OH 45365 American Legion Post 217 With each passing day Fall shows us the beauty of the season. Too bad it also signals Winter won t be too far behind. We have put together a list of our elderly members with the intention of visiting them in their homes and letting them know they are still very important to our Post. We plan on visiting on the last Sunday of the month between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. If you would like to join us, please let me know at sporttracx2@yahoo.com or 937-726-0338. Your help is appreciated. Membership is still on my mind as we move towards Veterans Day. It seems we continue to lose long time members and struggle to recruit replacements among our younger Veterans. If you know an eligible Veteran...SIGN THEM UP!!! Our consolidation process continues, and any news will be available at our regularly scheduled meetings you are all welcome to attend. Our brunch, the BEST VALUE in town, continues through May. Tell your family, friends and neighbors about this tremendous Post fundraiser. We can always use volunteers during these brunches if you are so inclined. Lastly, thanks to our Post officers, paid staff and all the volunteers who help make the Post a success. Thanks also to you, our Post supporters, for without you our failure would be guaranteed. Remember our troops and their families in your daily prayers. Your Commander, Jim Moorman TRUSTEE CORNER Hello again! First up - if anyone has rented our hall recently PLEASE GIVE US A CALL!!!! Contact Kathy Elsass at 937-492-6410. She has taken over the Hall bookings and Special Events. Good luck on her new duties. Things coming up - November 3rd - our Veterans Day Membership dinner- it will run from 4-6pm this is for members that have paid their 2019 dues. Bring your membership card or pay your dues at the door. November 4th and December 9th are the dates for our brunches to finish out the year. December 24th is our Post Christmas Party, bring your family for a great time. Larry Music has resigned as a trustee - thanks for all your hard work - we will miss you. Welcome Bob Risinger to the trustees to fill the vacancy. And finally - thanks to everyone that has volunteered for the brunches either by working it or bringing desserts and salads. On behalf of all the Trustees, Jim Butler Auxiliary Unit 217 President Linda Limbert The colors of autumn are with us once again. With this also comes the very bright and colorful red poppy. The ladies of the Auxiliary have been busy planning the annual poppy days on November 8 th, 9 th and 10 th. They will be at several locations in the city passing out the symbolic flowers, which are made mostly by hospitalized Veterans. Donations from these are used solely for the help and support of Veterans and their families. Please help us make this year a huge success. Our annual card party was held on October 23 rd. This article had to be submitted before that date, so I will have more on that at a later date. The ladies all worked hard putting it all together so I am sure it (continued on pg. 2)

was a great time for all those attending. Once again, we will be collecting non-perishable food items in the barrels, located in the Legion, for our Christmas baskets. These all go to local Veterans and their families. Please get in the holiday spirit and donate all you can to this worthy cause. November 3 rd is the Veteran s dinner and we are asked to supply the desserts for this occasion. November 4 th and December 9 th are the brunches and we will need to bring our delicious desserts and salads for these as well. May you all enjoy a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season! Linda Limbert Membership Legionnaires, you should have received your dues notice from National for the 2019 year by now. Many of you have responded by paying your dues before the Early Bird cutoff and we thank you for that. For those of you holding off, please help your Post receive the Brown Jug Award for meeting the goal of obtaining 80% of our Quota for the Post, which is set at 696 members, by November 11. We are currently at 64.7% and we need your support by helping us reach this goal. We will be having our annual Veterans Day membership drive / turkey dinner on Saturday, November 3rd from 4:00 PM 6:00 PM. Please help us reach our quota. Rick Lunsford First Vice Commander Juniors of the American Legion Auxiliary The Junior Auxiliary Members, along with the Young Sons of the American Legion, began assisting with the Post Family Juniors Brunches. The youth members all enjoy meeting everyone and enjoy talking with the Veterans especially. The Juniors will continue to clean and show respect for the Post MIA/POW Table and hope that everyone will also. Thank You to ALL Veterans who have served so that we may enjoy our freedom in the USA. Thank You, Juniors of Unit 217 Auxiliary Membership I want to thank the ladies for paying their dues. A special Thank You for our Honorary members for their dues and donations. I have been informed that some ladies have not received their dues notices in the mail. They told us at the district meeting that if Nationals has your Email that you should have received your notice that way. Just a reminder that your dues are due by December 31 and they are $30.00. After that date you are not eligible to sign the books for the drawings till your dues are paid. Mary Kies Goodbye summer, hello fall! I would like to take a moment to thank all of our volunteers who have really stepped up to the plate to make your experience at our canteen a pleasant one! I would also like to thank Kathy Elsass for taking on the initiative to keep our upcoming events in order. She has been doing a great job showing, and booking our hall! With the autumn season is progress, what a great time to come enjoy a meal with the family, or a cold beverage with friends! We plan to have an Ohio state vs. Michigan party here at our post on November 24th at 12:00pm. We will be doing raffles, a 50/50 drawing, and much more! Feel free to bring a dish to share! Further details will be posted at our canteen, so keep your eyes open! Daily lunch and evening specials are still continuing in the canteen. Be sure to stop in and try a tenderloin, pizza and wings, or one of our many other delicious menu options! Tiffany Olding Manager of American Legion Post 217 Canteen THIS IS THE FINAL NEWSLETTER UNLESS SOMEONE IS WILLING TO STEP UP AND BE THE EDITOR. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED PLEASE CONTACT THE POST.
