Specific areas covered include disease states of the newborn, children & adolescents as well as congenital & metabolic disorders. This course will incorporate lectures, readings, videos, participatory discussions & composition to accomplish these goals. Goals: Upon completion of this course, the enrollee will be better able to: 1. Describe the pharmacological differences between infants, children, adolescents & adults 2. Describe common neonatal & pediatric disease states 3. Evaluate neonatal & pediatric dosing on a per kilogram basis 4. Describe problems of ingestions, poisonings & child abuse 5. Discuss the neurodevelopmental disorders of autism & ADHD 6. Evaluation Methods Overview: Grading Policy: The course grade will consist of one journal article review or one drug formulary review (20 %) & two non cumulative exams (80%) Grading Scale: 90 & above: A 80-89: B 70-79: C 60-69: D Less than 60: F Assignment Descriptions: Journal article review: Each student can choose an article from the pediatric and/or neonatology literature & critically review it as to its content, methodology, results & conclusions (20 %) OR Drug Formulary Review: Each student can choose a medication used in pediatric and/or neonatal pharmacotherapy & describe it use, dose, contraindications/cautions, drug interactions, adverse reactions, economics & safety in pregnancy & children (20 %) Competencies: 1. Evaluate pediatric pharmacotherapy orders 2. Compile patient information to maintain a database sufficient to provide pharmaceutical care 3. Assess patient information & optimize therapy using clinical, humanistic & pharmacoeconomic information 4. Develop, implement, evaluate & modify a pharmaceutical plan of care 5. Counsel & educate patients & health care professionals 6. Collaborate with other health care professionals 7. Think critically & problem solve 8. Communicate effectively 9. Self-assess learning 10.
