Peer Mentor Application Fall 2017-Spring 2018 Academic Year A Peer Mentor is an upper-classman who will assist and support the new class of entering freshmen. This program is for all freshmen students and mandatory for all Multicultural Student Services (MSS) Diversity Scholarship Recipients, as a requirement to maintain their academic scholarship with the department. The purpose of the Peer Mentor Program is to assist new MSS first time freshman scholarship recipients to have a successful transition to the UMSL campus community, by providing a support network for new students. The program matches mentees with upper class mentors who serve as leaders. This program is dedicated to assisting students with academic, career, social, and personal success through one-onone peer mentoring, campus involvement, community events and service learning. Benefits of becoming a peer mentor: Serve as a positive role model to incoming freshmen Develop and Improve interpersonal skills Ability to work with diverse student populations Inspire new students and create a sense of community Assist freshmen with successfully transitioning to college Introduce and engage students to campus activities and events Empower incoming student by sharing your experiences Impact freshmen students by being a means of support on-campus Peer Mentor Responsibilities: Peer Mentors will be required to attend training and are required to meet and keep in touch with their assigned mentees throughout the academic year. You are required to introduce each mentee to two UMSL related events (cultural/social) each semester. Each month peer mentors will also be responsible for completing a detailed time sheet. Peer mentors typically spend a minimum of 6-10 hours per month with their mentees. This is a paid position of $8.00 per hour and we expect your interest to participate in this role will be fueled by your dedication and interest in making campus life a better place for new students. This application process is competitive and we expect you to do your absolute best when answering each question.
