Volume XXVI, Issue VIII Chattanooga Area Dental Society NEWSLETTER President President elect Secretary Treasurer Executive Secretary Dr. Matt Brock Dr. Brian Schenck Dr. David Champion Dr. Charles McBrayer Rhonda Jones 423.892.4727 423.875.4812 423.843.0418 423.870.9567 423.886.9191 March, 2016 Mark McOmie, DMD Dental Materials Update Many things have changed in Dentistry over the last few years, in fact they are changing faster than at any time in the history of dentistry. Some of these changes are great and some are hype that simply do not work. How do you know if a product is good or not? In this course we will explore the trends of dentistry today. We will cover many of the hot areas of dentistry including: monolithic crowns, zirconia, emax, and a new category that is not quite a year old, anterior zirconia. How do the new esthetic materials compare to our tried and true materials? There are many brands of these materials, are they all equal? Which ones are best? What about the opposing dentition? How do we cement these materials and keep them from falling off? Intra Oral Scanning is a great advancement in dentistry with prices ranging from $15,000 to $60,000. Which one should I buy? Should you buy one at all? What can be done with these scanners and how hard are they to incorporate into a practice? New bonding agents, cements, matrices, and isolation systems are coming on the market by the hundreds. Which ones work the best? In this course these questions and more will be answered in a lively fun format. It is a practical course giving pearls for your dental practice that you can implement the next day. CADS February Member Program: Tuesday, March 8th Dr McOmie attended the University of Utah, while in college he was a dental lab technician for several years. He then attended the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Upon graduating, he moved to Chattanooga, TN and started a practice with his wife, Ellen, in 1998. He is a CR evaluator for Gordon Christensen s CR Foundation, the ONLY evaluation group that does not accept money from manufacturers to evaluate products. He has evaluated over 400 dental products in the last decade. He has many publications in peer reviewed journals and newsletters, such as the ADA News and the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry. Considered an expert in the field of dental materials, he presents lectures on dental materials across the country. Thank you to this month s Sponsors: 1

President s Message: Spring is in the air! We still have some potential winter weather ahead of us, but it sure is nice to feel things warming up a bit. Please take advantage of this season of new beginnings to attend a CADS meeting, bring a friend, and reconnect with some colleagues that you may have not seen for a while. As I am sure you have seen from Dr. Johnson s reports, dental meetings across the country are dropping in attendance. Our own TDA has started the process to revamp our spring meeting to become a business only meeting without vendors or CE. In a recent CADS board meeting it was suggested that we begin to re-evaluate the frequency and attendance of our own CADS meetings. I would encourage you all to give this some thought and rethink what you would like to get out of a CADS meeting. In discussing dental meetings in general, I find many colleagues that say that they get as much, or more, out of the side conversations and interactions with their peers as they do the actual main presentation. I would ask you to make an active decision in regards to what is most important to you. If apathy takes over and we do not actively engage in our meetings we will be passively allowing decisions to be made for us and it may not be the path that we would want to go down. The national trend of not joining civic organizations, religious organizations, dental societies and organizations is something that affects us all. We have had these entities to turn to for leadership and direction for decades when we needed to get something done. If the membership declines in these organizations it becomes more difficult to find an effective voice when a challenge arises. I will close by issuing everyone a challenge to engage in active consideration of what organized dentistry means to you and how you see it in the future. Taking an active part in the decision process allows you to never look back with regret and always be confident and comfortable with what lies ahead. Sincerely, Matt Dr. Matthew Brock President, CADS We need dentists, hygienists, optometrists and ophthalmologists for a Remote Area Medical RAM Clinic Rhea County, TN March 12 @ 6:00 am - March 13 @ 5:00 pm Volunteers will pass out entry numbers at 3am on the first day of the clinic. As of this update the Board of Trustees has narrowed the search to two candidates. The Board of Trustees will be conducting a second round of interviews within the next couple of weeks and hope to have a new executive director hired by May 1. This will give the new executive director a few months to shadow Mr. Horvat and hit the ground running on July 1. The TDA has contracted with Mr. Horvat for 12 months following his retirement on as need basis to help in the transition. As soon as a new executive director is hired I will have CADS send an eblast to the membership with the announcement.
