Over 1.75 million doses of vaccine have been distributed. Up to 1 million doses of vaccine have been administered. At least 20% of the total population have been vaccinated. This includes 50% of those at risk 50% of children under 5 years of age 30-40% of school children (called to date) 25% of those over 65 30-40% health care workers The programme will stop on March 31st 2010 except for all pregnant women over 14 weeks gestation up to 6 weeks post partum those in the first trimester in the medically at risk groups These women should continue to be vaccinated by their GP or at their maternity hospitals. Did you know that the World Health Organisation has announced that next years seasonal flu vaccine will contain the H1N1 strain?

2 Pneumococcal Vaccine Catch-up Campaign The Pneumococcal Vaccine Catch-up programme finished on 31st October 2009. Preliminary results suggest a uptake of approximately 70% which is a huge achievement. This will have a significant impact on the level of pneumococcal disease in children under 2 years of age. In order to get complete uptake figures please send any outstanding returns to National Immunisation Office, FREEPOST 4584 Measles Outbreak Ireland is currently experiencing a measles outbreak. Over 200 cases have been reported in the first two months of 2010. Vaccination with MMR vaccine is the only way to prevent Measles. National Immunisation Guidelines The National Immunisation Guidelines are reviewed regularly by the National Immunisation Advisory Committee. Please ensure that children in your practice are vaccinated in accordance with the National Immunisation Guidelines. Anyone who is not sure about their vaccination status should get another dose which will not do them any harm, and will protect against measles, mumps and rubella. This programme will target girls in the first year of second level schools. Three doses of vaccine are required at 0, 2 and 6 months. The vaccine protects against 2 types of HPV (Type 16 & 18) which account for 70% of cervical cancer. Plans are underway to implement the programme. More details will follow as they become available.

4 5 in 1 Vaccine The current stock of 5 in 1 vaccine will expire at the end of March 2010 and no further stock will be available. All children born after 1st July 2008 should be on the new primary childhood immunisation schedule. Check www.immunisation.ie for the vaccines to give to unvaccinated children born before 1st July 2008. Vaccine News Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines for all those in the at risk groups are available from the National Cold Chain Delivery service and can be ordered through United Drug. Details of the at risk groups are in the National Immunisation Guidelines Vaccine Ordering United Drug now deliver to more than 1800 GP sites nationally. Orders must be placed by fax 01 4637788 or email vaccines@udd.ie by your order date. (Please note this date is outlined on your delivery schedule.)
