Research tests new ideas in physiotherapy We can find out if standing up early after a stroke and practising standing up and sitting down helps people recover You will practice standing up and sitting down for 30 minutes Minimum of 5 days out of 7 Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 3

What happens in the research? Standing frame Normal physiotherapy GROUP A Standing frame programme Compare the results GROUP B Normal physiotherapy There are two groups: A and B Treatment Group A: standing frame programme for 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of normal physiotherapy Treatment Group B: normal physiotherapy for 45 minutes You would not know which you get. The computer decides. This is like flipping a coin

Where will the research happen? How long will the research last? The whole research will last for 3 years Your part will last for 12 months You will have appointments at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after your physiotherapy. Will I get paid? You will not get paid for taking part in the research Do I have to take part? You will need to decide today if you want to take part. This is because the physiotherapy needs to start as soon as possible after your stroke Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 9

Who will see the information about me? We will keep the information about you safe Only the researchers will see the information about you We may share your information with other researchers in this country We may share your information with researchers in other countries This helps with other research about stroke We will take out your name and personal details We will tell your doctor that you are taking part in this research project Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 10

What might be good about taking part? You may be helped by the physiotherapy You may enjoy taking part You may find it interesting You will help us to learn This may improve recovery for other people after stroke Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 11

What might be difficult about taking part? We don't think it is unsafe however the therapy may not help you There may be some side effects You may find the standing tiring You may find interview questions upsetting It will take up your time Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 12

What if I don't take part in the research? You will still get your normal physiotherapy Is the research safe? A committee said the research can happen They say it is safe They say that it has been planned properly Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 13

What if something goes wrong? This is very unlikely The NHS has set up a committee This committee will check the research The committee has different people from those who do this research If you take part in the research and if you think you were harmed there are people to talk to <INSERT NAME & CONTACT DETAILS OF COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT> Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 14

What will happen after the research? The researchers will look at the results They will learn more about standing up early after stroke What will happen to the results? What next?
