Course Description The John Shea Memorial Weekend of Otology and Temporal Bone Dissection Course at the University of Tennessee is an annual two-day course dedicated to the memory, legacy, and accomplishments of Dr. John Shea, Jr. (1924-2015). Dr. Shea was an innovator and pioneer in otology. His career lasted for more than sixty years, during which time he changed the course of modern otology with his numerous contributions to the field, most notably the development of the stapedectomy operation in 1956, and the refinement of intratympanic perfusion in the 1990 s for Meniere s disease. The Shea Clinic, which he founded, is a thriving, internationallyknown tertiary referral center for otology and otolaryngology in Memphis, Tennessee. This course was created in his honor, and is designed to help otolaryngologists deepen their knowledge and enhance their technical abilities in otologic surgery. Hands-on training with conventional temporal bone dissection, ossicular chain reconstruction, cochlear implantation, laser ear surgery, image guidance technology in the temporal bone, and endoscopic ear techniques will be available to participants. An honored guest lecturer is featured every year.
