Dear Members of Emperor s College Community, We are now past the midway point of the quarter with Spring registration just one week away. This new year is the Chinese Year of the Wood horse. It is within the nature of the horse to roam and travel, so it is an important time to keep to the course and stay focused. We are very privileged to have Dr. Jae Hoon Kim returning to teach the much-anticipated Korean Acupuncture concentration. Also, after five years Dr. Jae Hoon Kim will be returning as a Clinic Supervisor on Sunday afternoon; he brings his vast knowledge and experience in Korean ( four needle, constitutional & hand) Acupuncture to our program. We are also offering a second Sunday afternoon shift with long-time practitioner Dr. Michael Apelian. For this Spring quarter's registration for these Sunday afternoon shifts, you need to contact the Dean of Clinical Education, Robert Newman, by either e-mail or in person--these shifts will not be obtained through the lottery or through the normal registration process. Emperor s College's outstanding faculty--with their vast experience--provide us with the vision to be committed to the complete principles of Oriental medicine. This means that we encompass the different traditions of Oriental medicine and that our elective classes reflect this view. This quarter we are offering the following electives: EL141 Art of Meditation I; Armm, Brendan EL671 Eight Extraordinary Vessels; Twicken, David EL202 Anma/Shiatsu; Maeda, Atsuki EL864 Patient Interview Skills; Poncher, Kathleen EL651 Five Elements; Gumenick, Neil El 255 Jade Woman Qi Gong; Zhang, Helena EL312 Korean Acupuncture; Kim, Jae Hoon The course descriptions as well as their prerequisites will be posted on the student announcement board across from room A. Understanding how these traditions work across our medical field involves studying the contexts of the classics and applying them in one s own clinical practice. Within our faculty lies a vital connection between the medicine and its application, which is provided in our clinic and externship sites. I encourage you to open yourselves to all the traditions so that you can utilize additional skills that can be applied to great effect in your practice. Another new offering is the Being Alive externship in West Hollywood. We are successfully completing our first quarter there with over 200 patient visits. These patients are all HIV+--some of them with AIDS and some who have been HIV+ for the past 30 years. The cases are often complex, interesting and extremely educationally valuable. We feel fortunate and privileged to be able to offer our support to this organization. The patients are being seen under the expert supervision of Elizabeth Fine and your own Academic Dean. Spring quarter special registration for this shift has already been filled.
However, if you are interested in externing there during the summer quarter, start letting Robert Newman know of your desire. The externship at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center is successfully in its third year. If you haven t yet registered, there is still one position available for this externship. If you are a Level 4 intern in the Spring quarter and you are interested in being there at the Center, please contact the Dean of Clinical Education, Robert Newman, as soon as possible. While I know that you have very busy lives, it is vital to incorporate the elements of Oriental medicine and philosophy into your everyday experiences. Take the time to embody its principles. We are all set for a great year of the Horse I hope that you will enjoy it and make the best of it. I hope to see many of you for registration questions over the next week. Jacques MoraMarco, OMD, LAc Academic Dean
