This must be established as soon as the patient has a stroke, and better links need to be established between the acute hospitals and rehabilitation centres such as NILD. Orthotists must be included at an early stage as full members of the stroke team. At present, it appears that they are involved rather late in the rehabilitation phase, and this is not in the interests of the patients. Interdisciplinary education and training of all staff ( therapists, nurses, doctors, orthotists, outreach workers and others) involved in the care of stroke patients should be continued and developed as a matter of urgency.
