Welcome our new Board members! Kathy Trotter, President-Elect, will be working with us this year on chapter initiatives. She will represent us at the ONS Leadership Workshop this summer. Patricia Robinson, Nominating Chair, will be recruiting you for the next NCTONS ballot. Don t be shy about letting her know your interests. Jane Fellows, our Program Chair, is hard at work planning this year s TONS meetings. Christina Davis, Secretary, is doing a marvelous job, detailing chapter business and managing the Virtual Community. Mary Dunn continues in her appointed role as Community Relations Coordinator, involving us in worthy community events. Deborah Hutch Allen, in an appointed position as Leadership & Mentoring Coordinator, will find an excellent mentor for you from among our talented chapter members. Interested in mentoring? Please let her know which of your talents you would most like to share. Lori Laczko returns in her appointed role as Awards Coordinator, doing a fabulous job making sure our membership has every opportunity to be rewarded for their talents and efforts. Hello! For those of you who don t know me, I am AnnMarie Walton, the new Political Liaison for TONS. I m writing to share with you what you can expect from me over the next 2 years: A column in each TONS newsletter with lessons learned in my own journey to better understanding policy at the state and national level as it affects us as Oncology nurses. A message sent out through the VC at least once per month, and sometimes more often, urging you to take a minute to write an email to a politician to help take action on an issue of concern to us/our patients. These are time sensitive opportunities so they need your immediate attention but truly take 1 minute or less to write - you fill in your contact info and the letter is written for you. You even get emailed a copy. Other opportunities for political participation announced at Chapter meetings or on the VC. A program all about policy initiatives on April 16 th 2013 (details under Programs on page 2): Christine Weason, JD, a manager of the American Cancer Society, Cancer Action Network will talk to us about: - American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)/American Cancer Society (ACS) their advocacy effort - Overview of the North Carolina Legislature - Review ACS CAN legislative Priorities - How to get involved and make a difference through advocacy Marty Polovich, a local and national expert on safe handling issues for Oncology nurses will also come to talk about a regional policy effort regarding safe handling in our state.
