Speakers Nicola West is a graduate of the University of Wales College of Medicine (Cardiff). Nicola gained her chair in Periodontology at Bristol Dental School, where she conducts research, leading the Clinical Trials Unit and attracting substantial industrial funding. Current research interests include: developing research methodologies, periodontal conditions, bone augmentation and peri-implant lesions, the scientific evaluation of oral health care products, tooth wear, dentine hypersensitivity and tooth whitening. Nicola is an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and currently the secretary of the British Society of Periodontology. Since 1990, Nicola has maintained in parallel, a thriving private referral practice in Bristol undertaking specialist periodontal and implant treatment. Karl Bishop qualified from Cardiff Dental School in 1981 and completed his specialist training in Sheffield in 1997. The same year, he was appointed Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. He has a particular clinical interest in dental trauma and the management of congenital dental anomalies and is currently Associate Medical Director for ABMU LHB, Swansea. In 2010, he was elected President of the British Society of Restorative Dentistry and in 2011 President of the British Dental Association's Hospital Group. Karl was elected to the Faculty Board of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2008 and re-elected in 2014. He is a previous senior Vice-Dean of the Faculty and Past-Chair of the Clinical Standards Committee. He is currently Chair of the Postgraduate Education Committee and the Restorative Dentistry Faculty Specialty Advisory Panel; he is also the Faculty lead for Welsh issues and revalidation. James Baker qualified with honours from Leeds Dental School in 1996 winning the Wattsman Prize for best restorative case in final examination and The Rippon Medal for most outstanding student of the year. After a spell in general practice in places as diverse as Halifax and Alice Springs he went on to complete a Certificate in Restorative Dentistry in 2002 and a Masters in Conservative Dentistry in 2004, both at the Eastman Dental Institute where, one day a week, he has since had the honour of teaching the postgraduates and registrars in Prosthodontics.. He has owned a private practice in London s West End since 2006 and 2009 was awarded entry onto the specialist list in Prosthodontics. He has a particular interest in the processes of restoring function and appearance to worn or damaged teeth in the most conservative ways currently available. In recent years he has focussed on the use of ever more extensive composite resin restorations, pushing the boundaries of what is achievable. Bob Wassell is Clinical Fellow and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle Dental Hospital and School. Bob founded the MSc and MClinDent in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle University. He has extensive experience of managing Newcastle s occlusal and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) problems. Bob provides teaching and training in these disciplines for both undergraduates and postgraduates, lecturing locally, nationally and internationally. His splint study carried out with the Newcastle Occlusion group and published in JADA (2006) was the first controlled, prospective TMD trial carried out in general practice. He has over 90 peer-reviewed publications focusing on TMD, splints and materials science. He is lead author of two essential clinical guides: Crowns and other coronal restorations (BDJ publications) and Applied Occlusion (Quintessence) now in its second edition. Paul King has recently retired after 21 years as Consultant/Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the Bristol Dental Hospital and School (UHBristol) having previously been a Consultant/Hon.Senior Lecturer at the Eastman Dental Hospital, London. His clinical, teaching and research interests centred around the oral rehabilitation of patients with significant developmental and acquired defects. He was responsible for pioneering many of the minimally invasive restorative techniques routinely used within clinical practice today as well as being an accomplished clinician and educator in the fields of conventional fixed and removable prosthodontics and dental implantology. Paul has done much for the dental profession during his career. He completed a 10 year term as an elected Board member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, RCS England focusing much of his efforts on education as Chair of the Postgraduate Education Committee and serving as Vice-Dean. Among his various other positions he has been Chair of the SAC in Restorative Dentistry and President of the British Society for Restorative Dentistry. Tara Aghaloo is Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UCLA School of Dentistry. She completed her dental training at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency and M.D. at UCLA. Subsequently, she completed a Ph.D. in oral biology at UCLA. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Her clinical practice focuses on bone and soft tissue regeneration and dental implants. She is also active in professional organizations where she is a board member of the Academy of Osseointegration, fellow of the ITI, AAOMS CRPTA committee member, past president of the OMS Section of the IADR, and section editor of IJOMI. She lectures nationally and internationally on dental implant surgery and tissue regeneration, specifically including alveolar ridge augmentation, sinus grafting, growth factors, and periimplantitis. Bill Schaeffer is qualified in dentistry and medicine, has post-graduate qualifications in both dental and general surgery and is recognised as a specialist Oral Surgeon. He has been placing dental implants since 1996 and is experienced in a number of different implant systems. He is co-owner of two implant centres in Sussex, which focus purely on dental implant treatments. Bill has been a past South East England Committee representative and was Director of Education for the Association of Dental Implantology (2009-2011).
