Monitoring of Enhanced Surveillance for Severe and Fatal Pneumonia, 1 st January 31 st March 2015 1. The cumulative cases report since December 2010 and cases report during January to March 2015 During 1 st January to 31 st March 2015, there were 53 cases reported to the severe pneumonia database from 12 provinces including of 4 deaths. Twenty cases were reported from Surat Thani, followed by six cases each from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Saraburi and Chiang Mai, four cases from Kamphaeng Phet, three cases each from Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chanthaburi, one case each from Kanchanaburi, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phetchaburi and Sukhothai (Figure 1). Of 53 cases, 30 were male and 23 were female. Male to female ratio was 1.30:1. Median age was 4.5 years old (2 months to 88 years). Twenty-nine cases were children age 2 months to 5 years (54.72%) (Figure 2). Since 1 st December 2010 to 31 st March 2015 the Bureau of Epidemiology received 824 cases reported to the severe pneumonia database from 16 provinces including 159 deaths (9 cases autopsy/necropsy were done). The highest number were reported from Surat Thani (275), followed by Chiang Mai (143), Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya (72), Kamphaeng Phet (54), Prachuap Khiri Khan (52) and Chanthaburi (47). Of 824 cases, 496 were male and 328 were female. Male to female ratio was 1.51:1. Median age was 2 years old (2 months to 97 years). Five hundred and nine cases were children age 2 months to 5 years (61.77%). 2. Laboratory results All specimens were sent to the National Institute of Health for laboratory testing. Since 1 st December 2010 to 31 st March 2015, a total of 824 specimens were analyzed by Real time RT-PCR and conventional method, 484 specimens (58.74%) were identified as positive. During 1 st January to 31 st March 2015, the pathogens were founded and identified in 36 cases from 53 cases (Table 1). From 36 positive lab results, we found 4 cases with viral infection, 18 cases with bacterial infection and 14 cases with co-infection.
