Page 2 President s Message VOLUM E 10, ISS UE 3 Fellow Members, As the weather begins to warm, it is time to meet old and new friends while supporting the CFAAA. The 2015 CFA Class was rescheduled to begin on April 2. All members are encouraged to come and assist in promoting the program that got us all started. Facilitators and mentors to the new students are needed; please contact Alicia Marshall to volunteer. The CFAAA is hosting a fundraiser in conjunction with Kabobi Mediterranean restaurant on April 7. Take a moment to come out during supper and enjoy some fresh Mediterranean food while supporting the CFAAA. Make it an event and bring friends. Details follow in the newsletter. The annual City of Richardson Trash Bash takes place on April 18. Our very own Steve Jennings is coordinating the CFAAA effort. Contact Steve for opportunities to help keep Richardson beautiful and promote the CFAAA. The Fire 1 Rehab Team recently took possession of a shiny new Fire 1 vehicle and wasted no time putting it to the test while responding to a structure fire on March 16. Many thanks to Steve Jennings, David "VIPS" Gibbs, Bob Schneider, Jerry Gray, Ron Bemis, Mary Trujillo, Gary Reim, Colin Sledge, and David Hodges for responding to the call. Along with filing your taxes, be sure to attend the General Meeting on March 31; the weather should be far more cooperative. Page 3 Advisor s Message What's Happening at the Richardson Fire Depart- In memory of Chief Roberts and his passing, we thought it would be a good idea to try to raise money to donate in his name to a cancer foundation. The name of the foundation is Michael's Memories. It was started by a Coppell firefighter named Michael Williams that was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer. It sends a firefighter and his family on an all expense paid vacation to "get away" from cancer. You can read more about it here: https://sites.google.com/a/michaelsmemories.org/michaelsmemories/home We have ordered silicone bracelets that are imprinted with "105" surrounded by crossed axes and police shield. The back has the word "Salmon". There are a couple pictures attached that show the bracelet. No need to order, just come by Station 2 and pick up as many as you want. There are two sizes, large and medium. They are $5 each. All proceeds will go directly to Michael's Memories and donated in the name of Chief Danny Roberts. Note: Salmon because Chief Roberts was called that because he always swam up stream of others. Not going with the crowd and making his own decisions. Page 5 TCFAAA CHIEF S MEETING Feb. 21, 2015 Submitted by Debbie Conard. Cities in attendance: Frisco, Irving, Plano, Colleyville, Mansfield, Euless, Garland, McKinney, Roanoke, Grapevine. RCFAAA in attendance: Ray Knodel, Traute Malhotra, Chris Trujillo, Rick Wilder, Debbie Conard, Lela Paksoy. Plano passed the Travelling Axe to Garland Chief s Forum (these questions are paraphrased) How are the municipalities handling their rapid growth and any impacts they may have encountered? McKinney There has been a lot of growth and the challenge is that the city grew so rapidly that the infrastructure is challenged to keep up. They have created short term (1 yr, 3 yr, 5 yr) plans. They have also brought their community groups closer together for the Master Plan and plan to add six additional stations. Fire Departments have been highlighted in the news on the number of medical calls. Do you handle all medical calls with the engine? McKinney They have initiated the Health Care Program. This program explored which individuals accessed the FD resources frequently. The firefighters now spend time with them to see how to help, which has decreased their calls. They found that one person couldn t read their prescriptions and the other needed help understanding their prescriptions. They have reduced these types of calls from 55 per year to zero. Plano They have become more focused on disease related individuals. Hospitals now refer the FD to those patients that may need follow up assistance. What is the next new innovation in the fire service? Garland They are introducing a Positive Pressure Attack. Fires are burning hotter and quicker. Euless They are trying to implement a hand-held Doppler radar unit during search. And also looking at a hand-held portable type of fire extinguisher that can be tossed in/set off to a specific area where a FF is in trouble. What recent accomplishment in your department are you most proud of? Irving Has purchased property to build Station 12. They are also entering an agreement with Grand Prairie to build a joint training facility. They have upgraded their fleet, as they had a 28 yr old ladder truck. Roanoke Went from an ISO rating of 4 to 3 and possibly bumping 2. This is a proud accomplishment as they are a one station department. Colleyville Their small town is focused on customer service by doing ribbon cuttings. This opportunity gives them a chance to meet the business owners and see the inside of the buildings. Grapevine They are trying to educate the public when to call for help concerning heart issues and strokes instead of driving themselves. By calling for an ambulance, they have a better chance of by-passing a wait in the ER and quicker assistance in getting the artery open. continued on page 10

Page 6 In the last several years, community organizations have moved to social media (i.e., Twitter, Facebook). Has this changed how you communicate with the citizens? Irving They now have a FB page and a Twitter account. By the department posting about certain events that may concern citizens and news starts calling, they take a pro-active approach. For example, there was an injured worker at a construction site. The only place the helicopter could land was at a school. Citizens started posting pictures of this helicopter at the school, and before things could get out of hand with concern, the FD had posted that it was because of an injured construction worker at a different site and their kids were ok. They use Facebook to promote fire prevention and Twitter to update news. These venues help to squash rumors and get in front of negative publicity. Grapevine Just tweeted a photo of the TCFAAA crowd attending the Chiefs Forum. Frisco They have a more cautious approach of what is shared due to HIPPA. Mansfield They also approach social media more cautiously. Their concern is that is there is a prolonged event (i.e., fire, rescue, etc.) rubberneckers come to the scene and now they may have a bigger problem. They have also had firefighters called on the carpet for quick posts in either their personal or fire department accounts. Sometimes the younger firefighters are too quick to post something without thinking of the repercussions. Euless Does not post any house fires due to concerns about thefts occurring after leaving the scene. What new community outreach programs have you implemented? Mansfield The city has a Pallooza where the FD is able to reach 6,000 people for community education. Their Clown Program is involved, as well as live burns. Frisco Has implemented After the Smoke Clears, which gives care packages to fire victims. McKinney If a rash of fires occur in a certain area, they will visit the homes to check smoke alarms, inspect the homes and offer suggestions to the owners. What has your CFAAA contributed? Roanoke The Rehab program. Grapevine The Rehab program. Euless Help with the clown program, rehab, courier items to different stations, check hospital for backboard. Would like their help with fairs to educate on stroke recognition. The FMO was drowning in paper maps, so they rented a map scanner to scan digitally. Frisco Assistance with birthday parties, Fire Safety Town, and safety fairs. Irving Teach hands-only CPR, have issued scholarships, hold a firefighter appreciation picnic McKinney Assists FMO office with filing of plans. Helps with the Fire Safety House, annual FF banquet. In planning stages is a rehab program and neighborhood canvases. Garland Rehab team, assisted with a count of homeless and then helped with the warming center for the homeless. Irving Rehab. Colleyville Rehab, help with the CFA classes, kids camp and city events. Mansfield They have a small CFA group, but assists with refilling oxygen tanks. They are proud to say they are the only department with their own meteorologist (retired and present CFAAA member). The CFAAA is also used to sit for downed power lines until utility company arrives. This frees up the engine. They also assisted with the Firefighters games that were hosted in Mansfield.

Volunteer Opportunities We are looking for more CFAAA members to serve on the 2015 Scholarship committee. The committee will be meeting in the later part of April and first part of May to determine a CFAAA scholarship winner. Please contact Alicia Marshall if you would like to serve on the committee. We are looking for Trash Bash volunteers to help the CFAAA clean up a portion of the city on April 18. We also need a couple of people to work inside the Civic Center that morning at a CFAAA display table. Please contact Steve Jennings for outside help and Alicia Marshall for inside help. We also need one more CPR instructor to help demo Hands Only CPR during Trash Bash. Demo will be inside the Civic Center. CFA Class 20 Facilitators If you are interested in facilitating at the next CFA class, please contact Alicia Marshall. Class starts on April 2. CPR Also any one interested in learning CPR or First Aid, please contact Irene Redwine. If you want to further your education and want to become a CPR Instructor, also please notify Irene Redwine.

Page 8 It s Trash Bash Time Again! The City of Richardson is excited to announce the annual environmental event which will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015. It's easy to register and a fun way to spend time with family, friends or coworkers or just enjoying some alone time. Plus where else can you get a little exercise and keep the community beautiful at the same time? This event is held with the Keep Texas Beautiful Great American Clean Up. The Richardson Trash Bash started in 1993 and continues to grow each year. Groups meet at their designated areas around 9 a.m. When done, bring your filled bags to City Hall at 411 W Arapaho and put them in the containers provided. Plan to be at City Hall at least by 11:00 a.m. when the festivities begin. Lunch is provided, plus exhibitors, a children's area, a jazz band and door prizes. If you cannot bring the bags to City Hall, leave them on location. If you choose to leave them on location, let them know where you left them when you sign out. If you have books or clothing to donate, a donation area is on the west side of city hall to drop them off. Or if you need some compost you can pick up 2.5 cu yards on the East side of city hall. There is plenty of parking available this year as the document shredding and electronics recycling hosted by CPAAA is located in the parking lot at the First United Methodist Church. For the RCFAAA, Steve Jennings is chairing our contribution. We really need RCFAAA volunteers. We will be cleaning Cottonwood Park. If you are interested in participating, contact Steve. Page 10 CPR & First Aid Notes The CPR team, on February 21st, taught its first First Aid class. We covered proper procedures with gloves, assessing the problem, medical emergencies, choking, using an epinephrine pen, injury emergencies, such as stopping bleeding, environmental emergencies, such as heat and cold situations, and poison emergencies. For April s Trash Bash event on 4/18, we need one more CPR instructor to help with the demo in City Hall.
