EVEN SMALL STEPS MAKE A BIG IMPACT NF WALK 2016 TEAM CAPTAIN WELCOME PACKET

Neurofibromatosis (NF) can lead to cancer, deafness, blindness, bone deformities, learning disabilities, disfigurement, and disabling pain. NF can arise in any family regardless of race or ethnic origin. Roughly half of all cases occur in families with no history of the disorder. THERE IS NO CURE... YET. Hardly rare, but rarely talked about, NF affects more than 2 million people worldwide; this makes NF more prevalent than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Huntington s Disease combined. The Children s Tumor Foundation (CTF) is the largest non-government funder of NF research in the world, leading the way for drug discovery for the disorder.

WHAT IS A TEAM CAPTAIN? A team captain is the person who creates, names, and sets the goal for an NF Walk team. Team captains are leaders who recruit people to join their team and encourage team members to reach their goals. Forming an NF Walk team makes it easy for your friends and family to join you in your fight to end NF. Recruiting teammates exponentially increases the funds and awareness you raise. If you get five friends to sign up, they may tell all their friends, and before you know it you have a whole network of people raising money and donating to fund NF research! With each step you take, you re helping spread awareness of NF and the work CTF does to find a cure. And with each dollar you raise, you re bringing us one step closer to our ultimate goal: to end NF! OUR RESEARCH PORTFOLIO IS DEDICATED TO FUNDING PROMISING RESEARCH THAT WILL LEAD TO EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS. Young Investigator Awards Drug Discovery Initiative Clinical Research Awards NF Therapeutic Consortium Synodos Schwannomatosis Awards BECAUSE OF FOUNDATION FUNDING THERE ARE NOW OVER 30 NF SPECIFIC CLINICAL TRIALS IN EXISTENCE. NF Clinic Network treats over 10,000 PATIENTS PER YEAR IN 50 CLINICS NF research is also shedding new light on other diseases, including cancer, brain tumors, bone abnormalities, and learning disabilities, ultimately benefiting the broader community in addition to those with NF. Over 65 million people with cancer and over 35 million with learning disabilities could potentially benefit from NF research.

Getting Started 1. UPDATE YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE Your fundraising website is a quick and easy way for your supporters to make a donation. After you ve registered, make sure to log into your fundraising page and your team page to add your personal story, add pictures or video, and share updates when you re close to a goal or milestone. (HINT: Can t find your fundraising page link or login info? Check your email for your registration confirmation). 2. MAKE A LIST Use your email contacts, family, friends, co-workers, holiday card list, past donors, teammates, and those people you see often (whether that s your neighbor, boss, or Starbucks barista)...and just ask! 3. SHARE YOUR STORY Sharing why this cause is important to you is a powerful way to gain support. Send emails or letters to everyone on your list and tell them why you re walking, or share a bit about your NF Hero s journey with NF. Always include a link to your page and a link to the event site so people can donate or register. Also attach a donation form for who might prefer to donate by check. 4. BE SOCIAL Many people are able to raise large amounts and grow their teams by sharing their stories on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms. For tips on making the most of your social media accounts, visit www.nfregistry.org 5. SEND UPDATES Keep your list updated on your progress as you get closer to event day. Someone who may not have given or joined initially may see that you re only $20 away from your goal and decide to push you over the line. 6. DOUBLE YOUR DOLLARS Do you or your supporters work for a company that provides matching gifts? A matching gift is a donation a company gives to match a contribution made by one of their employees. Ask your company s HR department about their policies and submit the proper paperwork so a matching gift can be applied to your fundraising. 7. SAY THANK YOU Make sure to thank your donors for their contribution, and your teammates for joining, by sending cards or emails, or acknowledging them on social media. 8. SEND DONATIONS TO OUR OFFICE If you have collected checks from people, send them to: Children s Tumor Foundation Attn: NF Walk 120 Wall Street, 16th Floor New York, NY 10005 Make sure to include a pledge sheet or donation form with your name and team information so we know to attribute donations to your page.

GO THE EXTRA MILE Already done all that stuff? Great! To get your team to the next level, try holding a pre-walk fundraiser. Pre-walk fundraisers are events whose main focus is to raise money for the NF Walk. These also serve to try and pull in people who might not otherwise be interested in the walk. BE RECOGNIZED FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE FUNDRAISING EFFORTS WITH OUR FUNDRAISING INCENTIVE PROGRAM. Visit NFWalk.org for more information.

There are lots of different kinds of events that can serve as a pre-walk fundraiser, but here are a few ideas: BAKE SALE: Bake a variety of goodies and sell to people, with all proceeds going to NF Walk. PAINTING PARTY: Companies such as Paint Nite, Color Me Mine, and Painting with a Twist offer oneoff painting parties for groups, and often have programs where you can have one as a fundraiser. UNCORK A CURE: Sell tickets to a wine tasting; get wine and apps donated. CTF WRISTBANDS: Selling CTF wristbands is a great way to support your cause. Contact the CTF staff member listed on your event page and let them know how many you need. LEMONADE STAND: Go back to the original fundraiser, a lemonade stand. Be sure to put out a sign saying the proceeds will go to the Children s Tumor Foundation. 50/50 RAFFLE: Sell tickets to a 50/50 raffle at a large event or gathering. The prize is half the pot. The winner splits the pot with you you get 50% of the proceeds to donate to CTF and they get the other 50%. BOWLING PARTY: Ask your local bowling alley to donate some lanes for a fundraising party. Charge at the door. COMEDY NIGHT: Ask a local comedy club to host an evening in support of CTF. A portion or all of tickets sales can be donated and it s a fun night for all. DINE AND DONATE: Talk to a local bar or restaurant to see if they ll have a night where a portion of their sales (usually 10 or 15%) go to CTF. LASER TAG: Host a party at your local laser tag arena. Charge at the door or charge for each game of laser tag played. PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Host a pancake breakfast at a school, park, or place of worship. Charge a fee that will go towards your fundraising. Get the pancake mix and other food items donated. PRODUCT PARTY: Talk to a retail business to see if they ll donate a portion of the day s income to CTF. PENNY WARS: Host a penny war at your child s school. It s a friendly competition and it s a great way to raise money while having a lot of fun. SPORTING EVENT NIGHT: Talk to a local sports team or arena to see if you can get a CTF night at a game, and collect a percentage of ticket price. They may also let you do a raffle or sell CTF wristbands at the game. College, high school, and minor league teams are best for this. CAR WASH: Hold a car wash to raise money for CTF. If $500 or more is raised, the company may be willing to match it! GUEST BARTENDER: Sign up yourself, your friends, your boss, etc. to guest bartend at a local tavern. Put all tips towards your fundraising efforts.

GET YOUR WORK INVOLVED If you re able to get your company involved, there are some fundraisers specifically targeted at businesses you can try. These are less focused on spreading awareness to the larger community, and more focused on raising money and getting your business excited about helping out. Talk to you supervisor or HR department to see what fundraisers are right for your company. COIN JAR: Put coin jars around the office that have a picture/story of an NF Hero to help raise money. A standard water bottle can hold over $95 in dimes. DRESS DOWN DAYS: For a donation of $5, employees can dress casually on a designated day. An alternative could be to sell a year s worth of casual day privileges for $100 or a month for $25. ETIQUETTE FINES: Fine coworkers for arriving late, taking too long at lunch, not turning off their cell phones, etc. Donate the collected fines to CTF. OFFICE GOPHER : On your lunch break, offer to run errands or pick up lunch for others for a fee. PIE TOSS: Employees make a donation for each whipped cream pie tossed at management. PRIZE DRAWINGS: For a donation of a specific amount, hold a drawing for great prizes like gift certificates, tickets to different events, company items, etc. SPECIAL EVENT DAY: If you have a birthday or company anniversary approaching, host a party and collect donations for CTF in lieu of gifts. WIN A FREE DAY OFF WORK: Sell raffle tickets for $5 each to win a free vacation day. SNACK BAR: Sell candy, chips, popcorn, soda, bagels, or donuts at the office. You may be able to have goodies donated so that all the money raised will be used for the cause. JOB SWAP: Have employees enter a raffle to swap jobs with a colleague for the day maybe even the boss! Charge a $5 entry fee and see who wins. E-MAIL BAN: Ban intra-office e-mails for a day. This can be a great way to improve staff communication, encouraging employees to talk to each other! Charge $2 to participate and impose a fine on anyone who breaks the ban. Looking for more ideas? Talk to us! We re always happy to brainstorm and answer any questions. Contact the staff member listed on your event website or email nfwalk@ctf.org. On behalf of the Children s Tumor Foundation and the millions of people worldwide affected by neurofibromatosis, thank you so much for your dedication and passion to end NF.
