May 2017 AAUW of Cobb County Newsletter AAUW Cobb April Branch Meeting Recap: On Thursday, April 20 th, Cobb members hosted special guests. Members generously provided refreshments that were enjoyed by all. Nancy Coakley, Chair of the 2017 Eight Grade Girls STEM Essay Contest, introduced the winners of the contest, their families. First place: Erin Yoo ($75); Second place: Nkechi Holmes and Third place: Sophia Sobrino ($25.) Also present were Pam Dycus (teacher) and John Tanner (principal) from Campbell Middle School. Students read their essays reflecting STEM interest from aerospace, to neurosurgery to computer technology. At the business meeting, Amy Stevens introduced the Woman of the Year nominee: Darlene Duke. Darlene is the Director of Sweetwater Mission in Austell and has dedicated her leadership to the organization for many years. Sweetwater is a non-profit that has provided community support and services for decades to families and individuals in need in south Cobb. Next year, Sweetwater will celebrate their 50 th year of service. Operating on a much smaller budget, Sweetwater provides multiple resources to the community, just like MUST Ministries.

To honor our Woman of the Year, AAUW Cobb is donating $100 to the mission in her name. Darlene will be honored at our dinner celebration and we will have an opportunity to meet her and learn more about the work of Sweetwater Mission. Also, I am pleased to announce our AAUW of Cobb Branch officers for 2017-2018. President/Administrator: Bea Piddock Treasurer: Amy Stevens Recording Secretary: Karen Peters Joining the leadership team are Judy Ribarsky (newsletter/directory); JoRae Dahl (hospitality) and Debbie Karvey (public policy.) PRESIDENT S CORNER: IMAGES FROM STATE CONVENTION: I want to thank our members that volunteered to provide refreshments for the state convention reception Friday, April 21 st, at the Hilton Atlanta Perimeter Suites in Dunwoody. An exceptional spread and array of deliciousness was enjoyed by all. The reception was held outdoors in the patio/pool area courtyard. Everyone enjoyed an opportunity to chat and catch up... and meet and greet some of our guest speakers and student attendees. New AAUW of Georgia officers for 2017-2019 are: Yetta McMillan, Co-President (Cobb) And Sharon Dawson, Treasurer (Houston Peach) We are grateful for their leadership and dedication to AAUW of Georgia.

State Convention on Saturday, April 22nd, was in a graciously decorated pavilion tent at the hotel... a spacious venue for the 60 or so attendees. Cobb was well represented at the convention as well as the reception. AAUW of Georgia celebrated 90 years with an anniversary cake. Co-Presidents, Yetta McMillan and Myra Carmon, recognized past state presidents during the program. Yetta presented the President s Award to Valdosta Branch for the branch s ongoing success with the Sister2Sister Summit for middle school girls in Valdosta. Guest speaker from AAUW National Board, Traci Jensen, spoke about national plans, media resources and encouraged attendance at national convention. Also present from national was Amber, Giving Manager. Amanda Hammett, Millenial Translator, spoke about the value of dual mentorship in the workforce and in organizations. The final guest speaker, Gail Buckner, spoke about initial efforts to galvanize individuals and organizations to present ERA objectives during the 2018 General Assembly Legislative Session. AAUW Cobb received multiple awards for per capita / branch donations to AAUW Funds. We will share these awards during our celebration dinner in May.
