PROCESSED BY Patrick Leonard/SDH 4/2013 RESTRICTIONS None BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE William Weston Jr., MD, was born August 25, 1898 in Columbia to Elizabeth Vanderhorst and Dr. William Weston. He died on June 6, 1993. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, class of 1919, and he received his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1923. After graduation, Dr. Weston served an internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and was later chief resident of the Children s Hospital in Philadelphia. He was a pediatrician with a national reputation, and he was a leader in community medicine in Columbia, serving as President of the Columbia Medical Society, Chief of Staff of the Columbia Hospital, successful sponsor of the fluoridation of water in the city of Columbia, and was an organizer of the Easter seal program in South Carolina. Notably, Dr. Weston was the first physician in South Carolina to limit his practice to infants and children. SCOPE AND CONTENT The William Weston Jr. Collection, 1888-1932, n.d., 0.5 cubic feet, consists of case reports, correspondence, handwritten manuscripts and typescripts of papers and articles, and journal reprints about to the pediatric condition acrodynia, commonly known as pink disease, and related conditions. Acrodynia is primarily attributed to exposure to mercury, commonly found in teething powders. In the early twentieth century, approximately one in five hundred exposed children developed the condition. The collection is arranged in seven series: case files of Dr. Weston, Case Studies Conducted by Other Physicians, Clinical Notes and Information, Correspondence, Medical Articles with Foreign Authors, Medical Journal Articles from American Medical Journals, and Printed Materials. Series, 1: Case files of Dr. Weston, 1920-1922, N.D., consist of 9 items primarily pertaining to individual clinical cases and research in the study of acrodynia. Series 2: Case Studies Conducted by Other Physicians, 1922, N.D., consists of 8 items that pertain to clinical studies of acrodynia and symptomatically related conditions as observed during clinical trials by American doctors.
