Page 4 October 2006 FACES OF SUMMER CAMP

October 2006 Page 5 PICKERT S PERSPECTIVE On my first day of summer camp at Horizon, I had no idea what to expect. My sister Lisa had volunteered as an attendant the previous two summers and the recruitment committee had done a presentation at my high school, yet I was still nervous about what the next six days might be like. Prior to Horizon, I had never worked with anyone with a physical disability before. I was scared that I would mess up, not be strong enough for lifting, or not have a good time. Within two hours at the camp, I was no longer nervous and was just beginning to find out what an amazing experience the rest of the week would be. I was paired up with Mike Engels, and I soon met all the campers and attendants at Woodsmen cabin. Mike patiently taught me how to fulfill my role as his attendant, and much more beyond that was we talked about everything in the coming days. He even taught a slob like me a few things about looking a little nicer. Some of the highlights of the week included Battle of the Sexes, winning the scavenger hunt with Mike Jaffe after digging in the sand for close to an hour, and going to the closing dinner and dance with Sarah Hudetz. I found that the people make the Association of Horizon what it is as I kept meeting more and more amazing people. I really appreciated how camp brought together people with and without physical limitations to create a community of people who truly care for each other. I soon found myself not noticing wheelchairs, or equipment as I began to simply see people. I was sad when the week was over and I felt that I needed a few more days to connect with people that I hadn t met yet. The week at camp changed my life and I will never forget the memories I have or the friendships that I made. I feel like I m a better person because of the experience and I intend to come back next year to the special place that is Horizon s summer camp. -Jeff Pickert
