Fundraising Toolkit Your how to guide

Thank you You are truly awesome As a CanTeener I can guarantee the services you re helping to provide are really vital to young people living with cancer. In November 2010, at just twenty years old, my older brother and only sibling James was diagnosed with inoperable Renal Translocation Carcinoma (cancer of the kidney). Twelve months later he passed away. Our family s life changed so quickly. I lost touch with a lot of my friends; no one knew what to say. Until I joined CanTeen, I thought no one would ever understand what I was going through. I thought I had to deal with the grief of losing my big brother on my own. Thanks to you, CanTeen provides young people like me with a safe place to meet other young people who understand what we re dealing with and how we feel. Being able to talk openly about my brother made a world of difference. Walking into a room and feeling understood is incredibly empowering. I ve learned how to face my pain, process my grief in a constructive way and learned new tools to move forward. Now on the worst of days I no longer feel alone. So once again, thank you for choosing to support CanTeen. Without people like you our organisation wouldn t be there to support young people living with cancer. Best wishes Lucy Coombes CanTeen President

Cancer doesn t care; we do Cancer is terrifying for anyone, but for a young person already dealing with what life is throwing at you, cancer your own or that of a family member is an unexpected curve ball. Dedicated to supporting young people 13-24 come to grips with the emotional and practical toll of cancer, at CanTeen we get it. Together we ll ensure no 13-24 year old faces cancer alone CanTeen provides life-changing support for every young New Zealander impacted by cancer, whenever and wherever they need it. With 14 branches across New Zealand, CanTeen provides specialist support, builds a close community and connects young people with others who have walked in their shoes. Every day, cancer disrupts the lives of 10 more young people Young people don t expect to come face to face with cancer, but they do. At CanTeen, we believe life shouldn t stop with a diagnosis of cancer. With your support, let s show how much we care. What can your fundraising achieve? $450 $1000 $5000 to regain mobility. Provides a young person with a six month gym membership to gain strength and mobility after life changing cancer treatment, helping them get their life back on track. to support a family if the worst happens. CanTeen provides support with palliative and bereavement costs to support a young person s family coping with the trauma of losing a loved one to cancer. changes lives with peer support and tools to cope. Allows thirty young people to attend a three day workshop to give them the tools to cope with their cancer journey and to thrive beyond it.

Stuck for inspiration? Here s a few ideas Get physical Whether it s your local marathon or road bike racing, climbing a mountain in high heels, running the length of New Zealnd in a tutu - there s a million physical challenges out there, so why not raise funds while you challenge yourself? Sweet tooth The bake sale is an oldie but a goodie. Everyone loves a cupcake or a cookie so bake up a storm and share at your club or workplace for a donation. Dress down Get your school or workplace to ditch the uniform or dress code for a day and donate a dollar or two for the cause. Donate your day Is it your birthday? Your anniversary? Maybe your wedding? If everyone s asking you what you want and you ve got no answer then ask your loved ones to donate to CanTeen as their gift to you. Quiz master Gather the teams and put on a quiz. On top of an entry fee, why not offer the chance for teams to buy answers, it all adds to the competitive spirit and the funds you can raise! Shave away Heads, eyebrows, legs, backs. A shave or a wax is a great way to show your support and raise funds for young people living with cancer. Do you need some extra help, advice or want to talk about what resources CanTeen could provide you? Call 0800 CANTEEN or email info@canteen.org.nz

Tick the box Your fundraising checklist Get in touch Visit www.everydayhero.co.nz/ event/canteen to set up an online fundraising page and complete our online fundraising form at www. canteen.org.nz/ways-to-give/ fundraise/tell-us-your-plans to tell us your plans. Get online Where possible, always set up an online EverydayHero page. It s an easy way for your friends and family to donate to your cause and you don t have to worry about the money, it ll come straight to CanTeen! Tell everyone you know The more people who know what you re doing, the more you ll raise so shout it from the rooftops. You ll be suprised how many people will want to support you. Pick a target If you ve got something to aim for, you re more likely to smash it so pick a goal and go hard to beat it! Get a match Whatever your fundraiser is, if it s through your workplace why not ask if they ll match the donations of your colleagues. You ll double what you make and your company can get involved. Win, win! Get your friends on board The more people you get involved the better, so get others to join you on your fundraising quest, if you were going to do a solo run, make it a team run - you ll raise more and you ll have someone by your side.
