Sweet Charity Your Charity Sweet Charity Presentation to FDF BCCC Sector Group Technology Conference 27 th March 2009 By Patrick Davis

Sweet Charity - Background We are the charity for the confectionery industry. We have been supporting industry employees and their dependents since 1918. We believe in looking after those who have served our industry when they need support. Our vision is that every industry employee has a safety net during tough times.

Today We are now Sweet Charity the heart of the confectionery industry. We are broadening our reach, to appeal to those working in the industry today. We now offer employees the following services: Help for the Family Help in unexpected circumstances Help through retirement We help people that have worked for 5 years or more in the UK confectionery industry or allied trades

How we can help We offer relevant care, support and resources to make lives a bit easier. We help people maximise their income. We offer practical support to empower people. We offer emotional support, friendship and information.

How we have helped recently In 2007/08 our beneficiaries were better off by over ½ million as a direct result of our welfare service. Cumulatively, over a 5 year period, we have helped our beneficiaries to be over 2million better off.

Last year we: Provided over 500 quarterly grants of up to 260 per quarter. Gave over 400 people tailored financial grants for specific areas such as household adaptations and essential items. Our welfare officers have visited more than 1,200 people and, in addition, our volunteers have made over 400 home visits. We have sent Christmas and Birthday gifts to over 1,300 beneficiaries. We have organised 11 social gatherings and outings around the UK for our beneficiaries.

How we have helped recently We were able to give a one off grant to fund household adaptations to help a couple with two severely disabled children. We have given money to help pay for childcare during the summer holidays, for two children, after a husband lost his wife. We have helped a couple buy a specialist computer for their disabled child, who has severe learning difficulties. We helped an elderly couple increase their annual income by over 5,000 (a 40% increase) by helping them claim the disability benefits they were entitled to.

Case study how we have helped a manufacture Gita is 80 years old in poor health and lives with her husband John. John had had several mini-strokes over the past year, and his health had deteriorated to the point that he was no longer able to go out alone. We helped John fill out the forms and in May he was also awarded the higher rate of Attendance Allowance at 64.50 per week. Now that they both receive the higher rate, John will also receive the Severe Disability Premium of 48.45 per week. As a result of our visit, and the help given to Gita & John, their annual income has increased by 5,872 per year (which is a more than 40% increase). In addition they no longer have to pay rent or council tax.

How you can help us Manufacturer Make a corporate charitable donation to the charity. Bring staff and customers to our events. Encourage your suppliers / agencies / contractors to buy table at our events. Help us gain access to your staff to help with our promotion of fundraising opportunities and help us raise awareness of our services. Help arrange retirement gatherings for past colleagues.

How you can help us Individual Make a charitable donation. Join an Area Committee. Become a Volunteer Visitor. Help raise awareness about us through your company. Help fundraise through your company.
